A Harris poll traces a decline in Americans rating business highly for quality and opportunity. In 1986 73 percent praised quality but now 46 percent do, while views on helping young people and enabling creativity also shifted. The study links the drop to hard times and rising expectations of corporate responsibility.
A $3.6 million U S Office of Education grant funds a 24 year experiment in Berkeley California schools with 24 options for about 5000 of 15000 students. Choices include Black House Casa de la Raza Franklin Multicultural On Target and other innovative models. Students may switch options anytime and a basic traditional track may also be available.
Mrs Adele Irving, age 58, found dead Tuesday at home, funeral set for 10 a.m. Friday at Cook Funeral Home in Fairbury with Rev George Russell officiating. Visitation 7 to 9 p.m. tonight. She was born May 15 1888 in Bloomington to John and Albertina Carlson. She lived in Canada most of life before moving to Fairbury 24 years ago. Survived by two sisters Emma and Marie Carlson both of Washington DC a brother Ed Carlson Pontiac and four grandchildren. Husband and a daughter preceded her in death.
NEW YORK AP reports the Sloan Commission foresees 40 to 60 percent of American TV homes wired for 20 to 40 channels by decade's end. It urges copyright payments and looser import rules to fuel growth and envisions a vast home network with varied programming, education, news, and public access channels.
