Governor Ronald Reagan wins final approval for a $1.1 billion tax-shift package after a five-year battle with Democrats. The plan increases sales tax by one cent, raises bank and corporate tax, and redirects funds to schools and property tax relief for homeowners and renters. It also reduces the business inventory tax by 20 percent to address a California Supreme Court ruling on school financing.
John L. Eymann of Chenoa has finished advanced training in personnel management at Fort Benjamin Harrison Indiana. He begins a 15 day leave with his parents Mr and Mrs Lynn Eymann before reporting to Fort Gordon Georgia on December 10.

The State's Attorney's office spends time on these cases, while defendants may plead not guilty to trigger absences. Court costs and witness fees also burden the county.
