Trooper James Wounded in Shootout with Hitchhiker
Illinois state trooper James 37 of Kankakee was wounded and the hitchhiker killed after a gunman pulled a pistol during a hitchhike stop at Manteno Road exit from I 57 nine miles north of Kankakee. The wounded trooper underwent surgery for a bullet in the lower back. The hitchhiker, white about 20, died at St Marys Hospital. Fingerprints will be sent to Washington for ID. James is based at Ashkum, a Pontiac District substation.
