Credit Card Use in U S Grows Across Families

A University of Michigan study by Lewis Mandell shows about half of families use credit cards and the median user has three cards. Many also hold six or more, while 73 percent say cards make it easier to buy things they cannot truly afford. The research finds cards supplement checks rather than replace cash or checks in American finances.

Navy ends WAVES label as women in the Navy take center stage

Don Oakley notes the 30th anniversary of women joining the Navy on July 30 1942. The term WAVES is discontinued and women join regular Navy and Naval Reserve. Women serve abroad in England Japan Spain Iceland Italy Germany and Guam with enlisted women now in Pacific Fleet air squadrons and a female airman becoming the first helicopter plane captain.

Fairbury Council to seek bids for sidewalk repairs

Fairbury officials plan to solicit bids for sidewalk repairs while addressing a cable installation dispute with Bliss TV manager. Traub urged enforcement and questioned Bliss for delaying cable service despite a City Cable franchise guaranteeing service to residents. Flanagan Board Accepts Paving Bid for Street Resurfacing

Hal Frye of Farnsworth Wylie and Frye announced bids at the Flanagan Village Board meeting. Trico Paving of Pontiac submitted the winning bid of 11440 dollars to resurface streets, with work to start soon. Frye noted a December 1973 EPA deadline.

Minonk Woman Dies. Funeral Arrangements Pending

Mrs. Frederick B. Uphoff, 60, of Minonk, died this morning at St. James Hospital. Her body will be taken to Folkert Memorial Home in Minonk for arrangements in complete. An incomplete obituary notes survivors including sons Fred Uphoff and possibly others, with details pending.
