Castroville's Founding Election and Early Texas Oil History
The early Texas settler Castroville held its first election on September 12, 1844 for local officials and the settlement name Castroville. Henri Castro's colony grew to 2,134 in its first year, faced Indian depredations, cholera, and a drought, aiding Medina County's creation in 1848. Separately Texas produced its first oil well at Oil Springs in 1800, 106 feet deep in Nacogdoches County, while Melrose Petroleum Oil Company began drilling in 1866 under Lyne Barret, facing financial losses and wartime disruption.
