Marriages and local events touch Pocahontas community

Irving Staver and Pearl Wells wed in Pocahontas with Rev. Tiede officiating. The bride, daughter of Mollie Wells, is a local high school graduate. Groom is son of Mrs. Staver, an industrious farmer from northeast of town. Aolfe booked a Chau tauqua for next year, Aug 13 to 20, amid rival bookings by Laurens and Gilmore City. Grounds concessions delayed the picnic to the next day. Havelock lost to Pocahontas, Laurens fell 6 to 5 to Pocahontas, weather kept farmers in harvest yesterday reducing attendance.

Change in Ford Prices Effective August Second

Rain disrupted Ware Pienie plans on Tuesday but a baseball game between Havelock and Laurens was played. Laurens won 12 to 2 in a contest that, aside from one inning, featured better play than expected.

Iowa library movement expands with eight towns voting to establish libraries between March and July. Most towns have no prior public library, including Bedford Decorah Waterloo Greenfield Logan Malvern Mt Ayr and Hamburg. Garner builds a 6500 dollar library and Traer too funds a 10000 dollar facility. Also, the state board of control selects Rockwell City as site for a new women’s reformatory with 35000 to 40000 dollars for site and 50000 for buildings, housing 35 inmates from Anamosa.

National Anti-Saloon League tour travels midwest on Lincoln highway

A national Anti-Saloon League speaking tour visits towns along the Lincoln highway from Atlantic to Pacific this summer. The Iowa leg runs the first week of August with over 100 meetings planned in churches. The delegation left New York July 4 and aims for San Francisco by September 5 using two automobiles for transport and baggage.

Whitaker Notified of Secured Claim Reversal in Iowa Case

Referee H. H. Whitaker received notice that Judge Martin J. Wade in the Southern District of Iowa affirmed a decision that claims on grain storage certificates against Lockwood Grain Co are unsecured. Farmers in northern Polk and southern Story counties held about 50 000 dollars in such claims seeking full payment.

Aviator Lindsay Denied Pardon for Colfax Assault Case

Governor Clarke refused a pardon for Earl W. Lindsay the aviator serving life for the criminal assault of eight year old Grace Hopkins at Colfax. The state board of parole had recommended no change after review. the governor approved the board’s finding and left the life sentence intact.

O E Atkinson visited from Pocahontas yesterday while W J Allen conducted business there. A daughter arrived for Mr and Mrs Ed Whannell last Friday and a new son at Frank Steele’s home yesterday. Mrs John Schuler and Mrs W J Faber spent Sunday with friends at Melvin. Miss Thurma Allen returned home from summer school. Mrs C I Becker of Wyoming New Jersey visited two weeks with sister Mrs KE Strain. A son was born to Mr and Mrs G W Oleson last Saturday. Mrs Oleson remains in critical condition due to complications.

The Pocahontas Record issued an Allen Edition praising Senator J H Allen for governor. Warren Townsend and Jennie Thornton visited Pocahontas grandparents before lakes trip. they are graduates of the State University this year.

Bay City teacher Miss Clemens visits U Vance home

Miss Clemens of Bay City Michigan visited Monday with friends at the U Vance residence. She is remembered as the domestic science teacher in the school year before last and has taught last year at Michigan Agricultural College in Lansing. She has been re elected to the same post with a substantial salary raise.
