Local merchants report a rising shoplifting problem in Pleasant Grove driven by juveniles and increasingly by adults. Merchants plan to pool information on known or caught shoplifters to warn other stores, urging parental and school cooperation to curb the trend and its broader impact on the community.
Pleasant Grove High invites all parents to attend Back to School Night on Thursday September 25 at 7 30 PM. PTA President Mrs Walter Reimschussel and Principal John Gourley will give an introduction and orientation. Parents will tour classes as teachers discuss goals procedures and year requirements.
The Lindon Chamber of Commerce voted to drop the annual Community Fair, citing scheduling conflicts with Lindon and State Fairs. The fair has run five years since taking over from the Lions Club. next year’s status will be decided later. DUP plans its birthday open house at the museum and cabin.
Sherri Walker Linda Ewell and Melissa Patch 1969 delegates to American Legion Girls State will give their reports Wednesday September 24 according to Argilla Harvey American Legion Auxiliary Unit 70 president. The general membership meeting will be at 230 PM at Eva Adams home Unit 70 Girls State chairman. Mothers of the three delegates will be honored guests.
Letter writer argues Vietnam War is a poor man s war citing draft inequities in Vietnam. He recalls WWI draft process with serial numbers and calls for a lottery system to fairly select who fights, insisting all able young men bear equal responsibility in defending the country. He ends with a call to duty before Thursday.
Homecoming queen Jannifer Nielson and attendants Betty Oscarson and Becky Jorgensen were crowned after an interview with twelve judges. Other finalists included Melissa Patch and Marian McDonald among others. Weeklong events feature a barbecue, bonfire, pep rally, lighted G, turtle races, assembly, and Friday football game with a dance at 8 p.m. Alumni are invited.
Pleasant Grove Mayor Jay F Harmer and council discussed buying a used 1967 Cadillac Ambulance for 8500 with delivery in two weeks and 90 day balance funded from ambulance fees. The auxiliary seeks a loan to cover unpaid balance. council approved plan.
Steven C Walker, a standout local student and teacher, has received a Harvard Grant, a top national award. A BYU alumnus and former BYU teacher, he will pursue a doctorate in languages in Boston with $15,000 for tuition and a living stipend. He is married to Ardith, with son Scott, and is the son of Jess and Slaine Walker.
The Auxiliary Police and their wives sponsor a bake sale on Saturday September 20 at 1 p.m. in front of the Utah Power and Light Building to raise funds for a proposed new Pleasant Grove ambulance. Donations of baked goods and items from local merchants are welcomed to speed funding.
The Junior High School announces its annual back to school night for Wednesday September 24 at 7:90 p.m. A general assembly will precede classroom visits where parents will learn about the year’s objectives and programs for each child.
The Story Pharmacy on South Main Street Pleasant Grove was robbed between Monday night and 7:00 am Tuesday. About $500 in cash and $500 in watches jewelry and cigarettes were stolen. Narcotics case untouched. Owner Keith Story reports a young Spanish American man viewed the store earlier Monday evening. Police and FBI agents are investigating and details forwarded to Salt Lake City.
Pleasant Grove city leaders attended the Utah Municipal League convention at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City along with former mayor T. Fordham and other officials. Mayor Jay F Harmer noted sessions on criminal law and tax distribution, praising insights from Clark County Nevada District Attorney George Franklin and discussions on refund equity for Utahs smaller municipalities. Vic Chambers of Logan was elected league president, succeeding Fred Montmorency of South Ogden.
Arnold C Richins and his wife Mrs Melva Richins of Pleasant Grove observed their fiftieth anniversary with a dinner party hosted by their children at a Salt Lake area country club. The couple have ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren and plan to celebrate later with a trip through Arizona and New Mexico.
