Craig Schow Wins First Place at Science Fair

Craig William Schow earned first place at the 20th International Science Fair held May 5 to 9 in Fort Worth Texas. His exhibit titled The Effect of an Antihemophilic Rich Solution on the Human Body investigated pathology and technology. He received a $1000 scholarship and a funded two month stay in Washington DC to work in a major national lab. Sponsors included the American Society of Medical Technologists and the College of American Pathologists. Dr John J Andujar presented the award and Schow's work built on three years of study at Utah Valley Hospital under Dr Richard A Call. Exhibits numbered nearly four hundred from the United States, Canada, Europe and beyond.

Paul Fordham Named To Tax Commission

Paul Fordham of Pleasant Grove City has been named to the Utah State Tax Commission to replace Rawson Wesley Jense. Jense, who remains on the Utah State Water Pollution Board, praised for cutting pollution and noting Utah ranks fifth nationally in anti pollution efforts. Ricks College announces two Pleasant Grove girls among sophomores who graduated. Geraldine Monson and Susan James were listed with James earning high honors and a GPA above 3.66.

Utah Legislature special session sets record with tax restraint

The 1969 Utah Legislature met in a five day special session and adjourned without raising taxes. Utah cities pressured for an extra half cent in optional sales tax but lawmakers declined. Commentary notes the ongoing reliance on taxation and calls for citizen action alongside officials. Mayor Fordham resigns as City Administrator while remaining secretary to a local development committee and preparing to join the state Tax Commission.

George G Smith Seriously Hurt in Orem Accident

George G. Smith of Pleasant Grove 695 East 200 North was seriously injured Monday morning in a construction accident in Orem. He worked on structural steel for a building addition at the Miller Binding Company facility and was rushed to Utah Valley Hospital in serious condition.

Pleasant Grove reports a mostly warm dry week with blue skies and above normal daytime temperatures. A trace of rain fell Tuesday May 6, highs reached up to 88, lows down to 33, and weekly precipitation totaled a trace.

Poppy Day Slated For Saturday May 8 in Pleasant Grove

Pleasant Grove residents will wear red crepe paper poppies on Saturday May 24 1969 to honor veterans including those who paid the supreme sacrifice and to aid disabled veterans. Mrs Arvilla Harvey of American Legion Unit 70 Auxiliary announced the event and cited Estella Hanell’s Our Living Tribute message.

Colt League Teams Named for Pleas ant Grove

Two Colt League squads will clash this season as Pleas ant Grove fields the Grove Colts and Grove Angels under managers Howard Walker Darrel Hansen and Sam Robinson Leon Hatch. Rosters list players including Parke Hansen Ron Holman Kent Chipman John Beck Tom Walker Steve Whitehead and Gordon Jorgensen among others. Boat Handling Safety Course Starts on May 20

The Central Utah Water Safety Council sponsors a public series of boat handling and safety courses in Utah County. Salt Lake Flotilla of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary presents three sessions on May 20 May 27 and June 3 1969 at the Visitors Center Utah Lake State Park Provo Boat Harbor starting 7 30 PM. Strawberry Days Rodeo Queen Selection Set for Memorial Day

Young horsewomen from across the state may compete in the Strawberry Days Rodeo Queen contest on May 30 at 8 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Rodeo Grounds. Queen and attendants will reign June 19 to 21 with cash awards of 35 and 20 dollars.

Kiwanis Club Hosts Rhodesia Speakers at Pleasant Grove

The Kiwanis Club of Pleasant Grove held a Saturday morning meeting led by Kenneth Harvey with President Walter Brock presiding. Leah and Sandra Corbet, Rhodesia twins at BYU, spoke on their country’s culture and LDS Church growth, while Cornell Haynie outlined club duties for the Strawberry Days celebration.

Pleasant Grove Vikings tied for fourth with Lehi at the Region Four track meet at BYU Stadium in Provo. Coach Jack Hill’s team scored 31 points, led by Mike Shoell who won the long jump and Rondo Biggs with two fourth place finishes. Larry Jorgensen earned a first in shot put and a third in discus.
