Community groups invite attendance at a Family Life Conference at Brigham Young University on Friday January 31 with keynote speaker Dr. Eugene J. Faux. The event includes panel discussions and music from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Registration is 50 cents.
A Battle Creek Breeze column argues Salt Lake City Mayor Brack Lee pushes to raise a half cent of the Utah optional sales tax to one cent, promising $3 million more revenue. Activities include a film World Around Travelogue a morning concert by oldtime melodies a full course lunch and an afternoon program with BYU students and local performers. Residents 60 and older from the Timpanogos Stake area are invited.
Funeral services for Dorothy June Bird Sargent 42 will be held today at 12 noon in Pleasant Grove Fifth Ward LDS Chapel under Bishop Ruelon Robbins. She died January 27 in American Fork Hospital of natural causes and is survived by seven grandchildren, six brothers, three sisters, five sons and three daughters.
Variety Club members met at Mrs. Harold Armitstead’s home and elected Ida Halliday as president, Myrle Armitstead as vice president, and Mary Swenson as secretary. Secret pals were revealed and members enjoyed refreshments.
The city invites applications for the City Administrator role. Applications due by 6 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove City Hall. Submit at 35 South Main with details on experience and expected income.
J H Harvey succeeds Craig Wayman as president of the Utah County Horticultural Society for the new year. Norman J Rowley becomes vice president as talks cover rodent and insect control and pesticide studies. Dr Donald Davis and Dr Gar Workman spoke on insect control and rodent management with field tips from Norman Rowdey and other local farmers.
The 35th Annual January convention of the Utah Associated Garden Clubs met at the Garden Center Sugarhouse Park Salt Lake. Pleasant Grove Garden Club received three awards for club activities merit and yearbook plus a flower show honor. Mrs Lyle Stewart presented a report on past year achievements and 1969 plans.
The American Legion Auxiliary held a Jan 23 Child Welfare meeting at 2 p.m. at Reva Altman’s home. Arvilla Harvey led the session with prayers by Sylvia Peterson. Mary Washburn read minutes as discussions covered the 50th anniversary with the American Legion and Poppy Posters. Members then sewed quilts for Primary Children’s Hospital. Attendees included Emily Pederson, May Jensen, Elodia Goss, Barbara Baxter, Pearl Fowlke, Donna Walker and others. hostesses Reva Ahtman and Ivella Hansen with Dora Fisher served refreshments.
Snow College named Karl A. Christiansen of Pleasant Grove to the fall quarter high honor and honor rolls. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Christiansen.
Businessman and veteran legislator W. Hughes Brockbank will speak at the Chamber of Commerce banquet this Friday evening at 7 30 at Pleasant Grove High School. Tickets cost 1 and are available at the door, according to C of C president Gerald Belliston.
Firemen and Auxiliary members met for a fourth Medical Self Help lesson. A 27 minute film on bleeding and bandaging was shown under Reese Blackhurst with home safety emphasis and care of arterial and venous wounds discussed. Debbie Taylor named Junior Miss with guests invited and plans for the State contest announced.
Sgt John J Nelson 23 son of Mr and Mrs Gene R Nelson Pleasant Grove received the Air Medal on December 21 in Vietnam. He is a reconnaissance team leader with Company B 1st Battalion 173rd Airborne Infantry Brigade Mird Infantry. He entered the army in June 1965 and has also earned the Bronze Star Medal.
Alpine District and the Safety Council will offer a four week defensive driving course for all Alpine School District bus drivers at Pleasant Grove High School Little Theater starting Monday February 3 at 7 00 pm. The program, originated by the National Safety Council, aims to correct bad driving habits and update participants on freeway techniques. Coaches emphasize accident prevention for professional and private drivers. Register with J Earl Johnson or Mrs Ellen Brown, or sign up at the first session.
