First Ward remains top contender as M Men enter second half after a 48 46 win over Grove Ward. Grove led 28 23 at halftime before First Ward rallied in the fourth quarter. Funeral for Mrs. Etta Sherman Held in Windsorwood

Funeral services conducted Monday at 1 30 pm in the Second Ward chapel for Mrs. Etta Bacon Sherman who died December 25 in Long Beach California. Speakers included H S Walker and Mrs Startup with musical tributes by the Hales sisters Rowley and others. Interment at Pleasant Grave Cemetery with pallbearers all relatives. Sole survivor is a niece Mrs Vera More of Orem.

New Telephones In Pleasant Grove Area Lead Population Growth

The Pleasant Grove area shows a greater rise in telephone service than in population. J. J. Strong of Mountain States Telephone notes population grew from about 2,811 in 1940 to over 4,900 today, a 90 percent increase, while telephones rose from 217 to 821, a more than 320 percent gain. Since World War II demand surged, with the company investing heavily to expand service across Utah.

Becks and Harpers Win Firsts In Home Lighting

Beck won a 400 prize for ventrained decor in the Jaycees Home Lighting Contest and Mr and Mrs Perry Harper won a similar prize in the newcomer class. Harold Armitstead and wife took second in the old guard class. No second prize awarded in newcomer as only the Harpers registered. The homes decorated showed enthusiasm, Hal Haycock noted.

Police Chief Adamson Captures Would-Be Robbers at Smith Brothers Market

Police Chief Marion Adamson halted a New Year’s Day burglary at Smith Brothers Market after finding a broken south door window and apprehending Andrew K. Peterson, 33, and Joe Powell, 16, behind the meat counter and in the basement. Seized about 172 dollars from the cash drawer, they claimed different ages. Powell is a minor turned over to juvenile court. Both men, born in Duchesne, face charges in Provo. lasting details include a wife and newborn child for Peterson and alleged entries into Seaway Market and LeRoy Club in Orem.

New J C Penney Manager Takes Am Fork Store

Vere Lancaster, assistant manager at Salt Lake J C Penney, takes over American Fork store directing duties. He joined Salt Lake in 1936, previously at Midvale, later managed Main Street basement, Jordan High and LDS Business College graduate, a World War III veteran, with wife and three children planning to move to American Fork once a home is found.

Moyle wins Utah Red Cherry Pie contest for second time

Mary Ann Moyle of Salt Lake City and Pleasant Grove freshman at the University of Utah won the Utah State Red Cherry Pie Baker contest. Ellen Brown of Orem placed second and June Petersen of Pleasant Grove third. Judges included Gloria Petersen and Mary Blacks. Cash and merchant prizes funded the event. Moyle earns a Chicago trip to compete nationally after repeating her state victory.
