A full day of entertainment and awards marked the February 23 gathering for the Timpanogos Stake elderly. Chairman Paul Adamson led committees from Alpine wards with musical numbers, stories, and floral tributes.

Mrs Sarah Ellen Thorne West a Pleasant Grove Utah native died Tuesday noon at a daughter’s Los Angeles home after a song Mines She was born March 19 1880 to Joseph E and Nancy Holman Thorne She married Leonard West Jan 15 1902 in the Salt Lake Temple Survived by husband eight sons and daughters 16 grandchildren three great grandchildren two sisters and one weather Charlie Thorne Burial will be in Utah.
Harold Walker director of civilian defense for Pleasant Grove and Utah County assistant director completed a six week intensive course at St Marys College Moraga California. He was the only Utahan among 52 students from five states and graduates second civil defense official from Utah. The program covered organization fires warden service atomic chemical and bacterial warfare with live demonstrations including a large dynamite blast and rescue drills. Walker recalls a February 21 Bay Area alert with a red warning and total standstill on the roadway. He traveled to California February 9 and returned February 22 via Los Angeles with his wife.
The Non Teachers Association of the Alpine School District held its annual winter banquet at the Central School lunch center. A valentine themed dinner prepared by the Central and high school lunch depts, a film shown by Principal Ray Merrill, and square dancing led by Mr. and Mrs. Hart A. Beck followed for over a hundred attendees. Councilman Robert Oscarson announced removal of several city park trees to improve shade and growth, aiding park aesthetics and function.
The Relief Society will sponsor church programs across the wards of the Timpanogos Stake on Sunday evening March 2. The event centers on a family hour with inspirational talks music and demonstrations. Families are urged to attend and sit together in family groups.
The Grove ward Primary banquet will be held Wednesday March St with dinner at 7 30 followed by a program and dancing. Proceeds go toward award building. Mr May Ro Walker will attend in Salt Lake City with his mother Mrs Ada Richants and Mr and Mrs J E Theobold.
Pleasant Grove First Ward basketball squad invited to an all church tournament in Salt Lake City replacing a Chicago team. They opened against Provo Ninth with a thriller, Provo Ninth winning 38 to 0. In the second game First Ward beat Logan 20th and Test in Cache Valley 68 to 36.
Pleasant Grove’s winless Vikings hope for glory in the last league game against Brigham Young. Lincoln defeats American Fork 38 31 to keep pace as a tourney contender while Alpine fans expect BY to challenge despite a tough season.
Miss Rosalie Richards and Jay Olson won first and second in the Americanism essay contest sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 70. The seniors from Pleasant Grove High School created essays on "Rights and Privileges of An American" and were recognized at the Legion Auxiliary meeting hosted by Mr and Mrs Karl Banks.
Practical nursing training designed to bring hospital care to the home will be offered at Central Utah Vocational School in collaboration with Utah Valley Hospital. Maria Johnson and Verola Harrison lead the program with six months at the school and six months at the hospital, wages start at 9.50 a day then drop to 4.50. Interested individuals are urged to contact Mrs. Margaret Olpin or local Relief Society leaders for more details.
The Monday service at L D S ward chapel honored Mrs. Nancy C Barton with Bishop Welby Gammon presiding. Speakers included Don Mack Dalton and Joseph Olpin, prayers by Wesley Jense, music by Leo and Ann Hanson and others. Burial followed at Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. Survived by son George F Barton and daughters Stella Plexpant Greve Anne Hansen and Eilsia Smith, with 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Gordon Atkinson leaves Friday March 7 for Chicago to attend a thirty day course at the Utilities Engineering Institute. He will receive practical training in refrigeration and air conditioning.
Pleasant Grove resident Irving Johnson received a life membership in the Chamber of Commerce at the Feb 21 annual meeting held in the high school auditorium. He was the third recipient after James D. Thorne and Josis Kemp, presented by his son Lucan Johnson. The event also featured a Greater Utah Valley Inc film, a patriotic address by Dr. O Meredith Wilson, and notes on upcoming directors and a Timpanogos Stake Mission broadcast.
Pleasant Grove event invites the Timpanogos Stake Square Dance Group to a Friday 8 pm gathering at the Pleasant Grove First Ward recreational hall. All members are urged to attend per Stake Leaders Mr Earl Beck and Mrs. Earl Beck.
More than 100 school people including Alpine School Board members, officials and teachers attended a Feb. 26 address by Miss Dale Ringger of Scott Foresman Publishing Company at Central School. She urged teachers to teach reading from primary through secondary levels and develop word comprehension and student reaction to all reading.
Councilman Byron admonishes Pleasant Grove merchants to apply for 1952 licenses by February 1. He notes only about half have applied and licensees will be issued after review. Unlicensed dogs will be destroyed.
The Pleasant Grove High School band will perform at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium on Friday March 7. Bandmaster Harvey Rawlinson announced extra practice for the exceptional instrumentalists and invites the public to attend.
City Councilman Bob Oscarson recalls a wild incident in Pleasant Grove where a herd of deer chased a dog and a man into an orchard. The deer fought the dog before retreating under a tree, and Oscarson kicked the deer’s nose to drive it away, escaping unharmed.
