The Pleasant Grove Garden Club marked its seventeenth anniversary with a Monday celebration. Members gathered for a party to honor the milestone and reflect on past projects and community service efforts.
In Pleasant Grove the Heart Fund Drive will start on February 25 as Heart Sunday volunteers deliver educational information and collect contributions. Alta Mae Johnson, chairwoman, urges support to keep the effort focused and notes heart disease as the number one killer.
Pleasant Grove High School plans Freedom Week February 11 to 17 with two speakers. Congressman Laurence J. Burton appears February 16 at 10 30 am, followed by Senator Frank E. Moss at 1 00 pm. Programs include colors posting and a guest singer William E Petersen.
The Utah Supreme Court ruled the Salt Lake City anti prostitution ordinance constitutional by a 3-2 vote, reversing last summer’s finding. The decision followed District Judge Cowley sitting in for Justice Callister. Peggy Lovejoy alias Thelma Allred had been freed by the earlier ruling, and the column questions the court’s process while noting the law’s now-constitutional status.
Utah Valley Industrial Development officials spoke to Pleasant Grove civic leaders last Thursday at City Hall. President Grant Thorne emphasized regional cooperation over competition, noting Utah Valley is already an industrial area with 37,000 in the workforce and only about 4,000 in agriculture. Dick Stone urged boosting existing business, expanding markets, and diversifying industry while leveraging local advantages such as rail routes, highways, a university, a trade technical college, skilled labor, education, recreation, and available land. Richard Benson outlined seven action points including AVIDA, venture capital, local development groups, development committees, annual community profiles, land use planning, and a Future Industrialists of America youth organization to supplement industry growth.
Some 400 to 500 Army Reserve men in Utah County units met last Sunday with their old units before transferring to new formations. Col C Eldon Bitter, commander of the 38th Infantry, described a statewide reorganization that eliminates over 700 officers and men and reduces Utah’s 46 units by 10. Nomen assigned to Utah Valley units will be forced out of the reserves by the move. Bitter noted reorganized units may operate temporarily.
Renae Rawlinson a Pleasant Grove High School senior was named 1968 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. She ranked first on a Dec 5 home making knowledge test and advances toward state and national scholarships from 500 to 3000 dollars plus a silver charm.

Burton US Representative from the 2nd District will be featured speaker at UVIDA's Second Annual Installation Banquet Thursday Feb 15 at 7 p.m. in the Wilkinson Center Sky Room Utah County events include meetings with constituents a BYU game and Golden Spike Centennial Commission activities Burton is a charter member and the banquet marks the start of UVIDA's Blueprint for Action to spur Utah Valley economic growth Winners of the Annual Industrial Development Awards will also be announced.
Pleasant Grove City's Landscape Improvement Committee has been formed to operate this year under chair Jesse K. Thorne with Glen Young as vice chair. Duane McCandless park superintendent, Paul Blackhurst city councilman, Grant Fowles road superintendent, Jarjory Woffinden secretary, and W. B. Mayfield Jr. photographer. Garden Club reps Veatrice Stewart Alice Simper Olga Carling. Fire Chief Fred Keetch and Homey Robertson Kiwanis Club Orval Carter Lions Club Boyd Carter Jaycees. more groups to be added soon.
Three hundred seventy five Older Folk of the Timpanogos Stake area were entertained at the annual winter party held last Saturday at Pleasant Grove High School. A free picture show and travelogue opened the events at 10 a.m. Eldon Johnson welcomed guests and introduced Andy Anderson of American Folk for harmonica and songs. Dinner at 12 30 featured chicken fried steak and 50 meals were delivered to those absent. Awards went to the oldest attendees and long married couples. Mayor Paul Fordham and Stake President Boyd Fugal spoke, followed by entertainment from the Anderson family. The day concluded with thanks from Johnson to 66 committee members and contributors.
Mr and Mrs D H Fowlke of London report their son Pfc Earnest W Fowlke is improving at an army hospital in Vietnam. Army hospital personnel in Vietnam conveyed the news on Tuesday according to Mrs Fowlke who received the information last Saturday.
Lions clubs from across Utah meet February 16 17 in Salt Lake City to counsel with Lions International first vice president David A Evans of Texas City Texas. Evans will keynote the two day event, arriving with wife Betty after being elected at the 50th Anniversary Convention in Chicago in July 1967.
Hurst reported the Pleasant Grove City Council is weighing mandatory garbage pickup. He cited dump-no burn rules, a card system for self-haulers, and rising dump costs as reasons to make all residents share in the garbage system’s expenses and keep the dump operational.
Lloyd Warnick and Dee Swensen have been appointed branch presidents for Okinawa Serviceman's Branches of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Warnick, son of Veley and the late Blaine Warnick, leads the Naha unit and serves in the C-150 flight test section of the 874th Tactical Airlift Wing. He plans a May US return before a year in Vietnam as a C-123 pilot. Swensen, son of Ezra J. and Mrs. Swensen of Manila, presides over Kadena's branch, is with the 498th Tactical Missile Group, and recently returned from Vietnam with his Mekong Delta assignment.
