Geneva Steel Plant To Increase Ingot Capacity 20 Per Cent

United States Steel plans a broad expansion to raise ingot capacity by about two and a half million tons across plants, including Geneva Utah and Chicago area facilities. Roger M. Brough, chairman, says the program meets growing economy demand and will require two to three years with some earlier production gains.

Sixth Grade Spanish Study Spreads in Alpine District

Sixth graders in Alpine School District elementary schools in Lehi American Fork and Pleasant Grove have begun conversational Spanish instruction since September. About 350 students hear and imitate sounds words and phrases to build early language skills and cultural awareness.

Pleasant Grove Post Office receipts rise for year

Postmaster Ray Mills reports Pleasant Grove postal receipts for 1955 will exceed 1954 by about 1400 dollars. Through December 24 the total reached 19466.62 versus 18050.94 in 1954, with December mail volume up to Christmas Eve at 105490 pieces. The peak day was December 19 with 20000 cancellations. 200000 two cent stamps were used. Patrons’ cooperation reduced labor by at least 144 hours and no post office staff worked past 7:30 PM during the rush.

Vikings Win One and Lose Close One in Preseason

The Vikings played two pre-league tilts last week posting a .500 record. They defeated Spanish Fork 56 to 48 in a return game on December 21 at the PG gym, trailing at the half but closing the gap to finish ahead by eight. Lincoln edged PG 36 to 33 as Coach Don Crump’s squad nears the end of its preseason slate with a Friday night game looming.

City Budget 1956 Approved by PG City Council

The PG City Council released the complete 1956 budget showing total expenditures at the established level and an assessed valuation of 2 485 420.00. General fund receipts list property taxes public parks taxes and various departmental revenues totaling 62 211, with other notes on sundry revenue and tax anticipation notes. The document reflects city operation as a major activity and outlines anticipated revenues for each department.
