Residents in each ward boost district campaigns to keep Main Street clean while the Chamber of Commerce plans to acquire Lytle Brown property for park space. The mayor and schools back the effort as a city beautification drive expands to shrubs, flowers, and rose plantings, with April 13 as a cleanup deadline.
Mayor proclaims April 8 to 13 as Clean Up Week in Pleasant Grove urging residents to remove winter rubbish. Citizens should burn weeds and branches and place cans and metal in containers for city collectors, with noncompliance leading to city removal at the offender's expense. The drive aims to keep Pleasant Grove attractive and healthy.
The Scouts propose Mont Moransy cherry trees planted along the Provo to Pleasant Grove highway to beautify the route and yield a profitable crop. Boy scouts will assist widows and the aged in cleanup efforts. Neighbors are urged to improve properties to keep the area attractive. Families from American Fork attended a Sunday dinner in Springville. Mrs. C L Wright hosted a surprise party for her husband with games and luncheon.

Miss Rhea Johnson of Pleasant Grove, a Utah Agricultural College junior, was elected vice-president of The Associated Women Students of the UAC. Misa Johnson is enrolled in Home Economics and a member of Zeta Chi sorority.
Beginning Monday April 8 all stores will close at 7 p m. Merchants have agreed after time of effort to set a regular closing hour. Townspeople are urged to shop before 7 p m to ease stores into the agreement and reduce late customer traffic.
A Fire Department warning timely for clean up week urges caution with rubbish piles and sparking on roofs. Burn rubbish before 10 am so fires can be watched and all particles burned during the day. A prudent word to the wise guides residents to prevent flames at night.
The school conducts its annual athletic program with pole vault practice and track and field drills as students prepare for Meld Day. Twenty girls led by Miss Clark are chosen for the posture parade at the Alpine District meet in Lincoln on April 19.
The Alpine District Track Meet will be held at Lincoln on April 19 with junior high events at 10 am and senior high at 2 pm. A cleanup push for the ball park is urged by Chaubar of Commerce and local citizens as preparations continue.
Mrs Lavena Whitecar Backus aged 35 wife of George Backus died after long illness leaving eight children Hazel Clifford Edward Dorothy Virginia Lavena Dale and an unnamed three month old. Born in Salt Lake City she moved to Windsor ward after marriage. Funeral services held in Windsor ward chapel.
The Third Ward MIA presents a high class comedy The Family Up Stairs starring a splendid cast led by Mrs Norma C Adamson. The performance is set for Saturday April 13 with Mrs Grant and Dr B C Linebaugh ill at home. The event features many local actors and notes Mrs Leon Smith’s ward leaders enjoyed a pleasant Saturday evening.
The Timpanogos Stake MLA prepares the annual Gold and Green Ball to be held in the High School Gym Thursday evening, April. The MLA decorative committee blends Persian Junior promenade art with gold and green MLA colors, featuring the queen’s throne and a maid of honor from each ward. A Green and Gold Cotillion will be danced by a select group from each ward, with the best group advancing to district and possibly to the June conference. Superintendent A P Warnick and Miss Estelle Fenton praise the event as a premier season highlight.
Cornelius Baxter, 89, longtime Pleasant Grove resident, died at home Friday after a two year illness. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on March 7, 1846, he arrived in the U.S. in 1891 and settled in Pleasant Grove. Survived by wife and children David, Margaret, John, Walter, Agnes, and Hugh. Funeral Sunday April 7 at 1 p.m. in the Tampa Stake tabernacle.
Pleasant Grove Canning company directors met Tuesday evening to discuss planned improvements and repairs for the coming year.
Pleasant Grove high school students presented a program at Lincoln High School on Friday featuring instrumental selections by Roland Jacobs and John Halliday, vocal solos by Ruby Harper and Randall Musgrove, several readings, and group performances. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Olpin and others who traveled to Ephraim Sunday for the funeral of Han sen Hansen, Belle Olpin Hansen’s father in law. the Olpin hearse was used for the service.
