Sugar Beet Contracts Approved Under 1948 Sugar Act Terms

Officials of the Beet Growers Association and the Utah Idaho Sugar Company outline 1948 contract terms including beets paid by a price scale tied to net returns and a $5.25 per 100 lb base, with government benefit payments to Dec 31 1952 if prices hold. Estimated farmer receipts run about $12.50 a ton under certain sugar content assumptions, with $10.09 from the company and $2.41 from government supports. The act aims to stabilize prices for consumers and growers, enabling near current levels if sugar content averages 15.5 percent over ten years, and to ensure adequate field labor through grower-company cost sharing.
