Joe Kantor, 63, a longtime resident who is blind, rescued Rose Pistereich after waves swept her off balance in Miami Beach. Lifeguards pulled both from the water as Kantor kept calling for help and guiding his companion to safety.
A unilateral Viet Cong cease-fire for Buddha's birthday began at 7 a.m. as allied forces pause 19 to 21 hours later. Saigon and the U.S. say they will observe. Reports flag ongoing artillery and rocket attacks, with Vietnam and U.S. forces continuing operations in Dien Ban, Dong Ap Bia, and Apache Snow near A Shau Valley.
The Ladybirds five members were charged with disorderly conduct after a fingerprinting in the police station. Sheriff Ray Wilson warned attorney James Moore to stop interfering with booking procedures, and the bond was set at 750 with a possible cash bond request. Attorney Doug Andrews plans to move to quash the charge citing First Amendment arguments.

River Rat Commodore Paul Roberts estimated more than 100 boats would travel down the Choctawhatchee River Friday to celebrate Fort Walton Beach’s Billy Bowlegs Festival. He noted Geneva Mayor Hugh Herrington plans over 7 percent of the boats, with others joining along the river to surpass 100. A large fish fry at Black Creek south of Freeport will feed about 1,400 attendees with 800 pounds of fish, welcoming Geneva visitors who previously toured Geneva to boost river recreation interest. Ellis Meigs, Pitts subdivision mayor, will greet the guests at Black Creek.
President Nixon proposed a revamped foreign aid program with a price tag about 800 million higher than last year’s vote. He argued continued aid is essential to advance U S goals and a world order of peace and justice amid an aid review by a task force.
Olga Terrell reports ongoing sponsor drive for the Billy Bowlegs Queen pageant. Several sponsors have stepped forward, including Ray Brown and Rave Masters, with a $15 cost to sponsor a contestant in a white swimsuit.
Bowlegs Festival kicks off its 14th annual celebration in the Playground area led by Fort Walton Beach attorney Erwin Fleet and his krewe. The week features boating, treasure hunts, arts and crafts, sports, games, and a Krewe Parade with Coronation. Daily schedules and events fill the lineup from Saturday through Sunday with activities for all ages.
