North Vietnamese forces with tanks and artillery attacked the My Chanh River line north of Hue and Kontum in the Central Highlands. They were repelled with heavy losses in the north while seizing part of Kontum. Attacks also struck Da Nang, blew up Nam O bridge on Highway 1, and overran a firebase and three villages in Que Son valley. No immediate casualty reports. other actions included recapture attempts near Dat Do.
Senate leaders praised progress on a U.S.-Soviet arms limitation pact but Senate Armed Services Committee critics keep pressing for ratification delays. Senator Tower voiced serious reservations while Senators Jackson and Goldwater doubt the treaty’s scope. Jackson warned of fixed missile counts and large Soviet payload missiles looming in the arsenals.
