The Florida House approved an 86 to 28 vote on a 1.387 billion dollar appropriation, while the Senate advanced a 1.325 billion dollar package. Senate President Jerry Thomas said a conference committee would likely meet weekend, as differences exceed 60 million.
North Vietnamese gained a new supply route through southern Laos as monsoons began flooding northern routes. Royal Lao forces evacuated Houei Kong on the Bolovens Plateau, leaving Hanoi in control of the plateau and improving access to Vietnam and northeastern Cambodia.
Nine Jewish men in a Leningrad court were convicted on charges linked to an attempted airplane hijacking and anti-Soviet agitation. Sentences ranged from one to ten years in labor camps with varying regimes and privileges. The verdict drew international protests and was announced by Tass, with appeals allowed.
Before the Okaloosa County Hospital board meeting chairman Dr. Robert Saxer criticized Attorney General Robert Shevin's ruling that a physician at a county hospital cannot serve on the board. He alleged court house influence targets Dr. Maxwell Carroll and himself and warned of precedent. A bill to shift control to county commissioners seeks to abolish the nine member board for a five member advisory panel.
A fleet of small Russian trawlers steamed through a lobster boat's gear off Nantucket while U S and Russian officials met nearby to curb harassment. The Pat San Marie reported 16 trawlers passing at 5 45 a m EDT as fog hampered visibility. No damage estimates given.
