The Florida Senate narrowly passed a measure granting local officials power to declare major emergency restrictions during riots. The bill allows curfews and limits on firearms alcohol and traffic, and can confine residents to their homes. It moves to the House for action.
Apollo 10 crews Air Force Col. Thomas P. Stafford Navy Cmdr. John W. Young and Eugene A. Cernan pass the halfway point of their perilous lunar flight. The spacecraft remains on a quarter million mile mission toward moon orbit as a crescent moon blooms ahead.
The 1969 Florida Legislature moves to curb general bill introductions in the final weeks of the 60 day session with a 4:30 p.m. Tuesday filing cutoff in the House and noon Wednesday in the Senate. Non emergencies will roll to the 1970 session. debates linger on carryover and potential special sessions as lawmakers weigh a stronger cabinet and state reform.
Gov Claude Kirk signed a law making Washington's Birthday Memorial Day Columbus Day and Veterans Day official holidays to be celebrated on the nearest Mondays starting January 1 1971. The law aligns with a recent federal act and specifies the third Monday in February last Monday in May second Monday in October and fourth Monday in October for the holidays.
Citizens for Better Government Committee attorney James E. Moore said documents on Fort Walton Beach city hall discrepancies were turned over to the governor's legal staff. He noted sworn depositions and emphasized the case will not be pursued in the news media.
Maj. Willard F. McMillen, 43, of Winona Minnesota, instructor pilot, and 2nd Lt. John R. McKenzie, 24, of Knoxville Tennessee, student, died when their twin engine trainer crashed 17 miles west of Hurlburt Field during a routine training flight. The plane was destroyed. Both men aboard were killed.
An afterburner exploded on an RFIC Phantom during takeoff from Offutt Air Force Base. Pilot Capt. J R Wortmann and co pilot Capt. J F Hughn landed safely after control problems. The aircraft, from Mountain Home AFB Idaho and assigned to the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, was at Offutt for Armed Forces Day. The cause remains undetermined and damage was confined to the afterburner.
The Okaloosa County Education Association will present a School Bell award to Duke Wilson and the Playground Daily News at its 7:30 p.m. meeting at Niceville Senior High School. The event is the final meeting of the school year and will include elections for 1969 70 officers.
Dr Norman Vick fishing out of Destin aboard the Rachel Carson landed a blue marlin estimated near 300 pounds on Monday. The catch marked the season’s first blue marlin and was reported from the DeSotoCan yon area.
The House approved a measure to permit certain area restaurants to serve liquor by the drink. The bill allows licensed establishments with 200 seating and over 4,000 square feet to obtain beverage licenses. Harbor Light co owner Mitchell Benaquis and partner Ruth Pu halla Conrad welcomed the move, hoping for smooth approval. The bill does not create lounges but lets eligible restaurants serve drinks at tables standing against earlier dry rules.
Dr Hugh Hudson was elected Friday as the new president of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce succeeding Maurice McLaughlin. Ken Williamson was chosen first vice president, Eulice Shelley treasurer, with Widad man as second vice president.
About 1,200 Fort Walton Beach residents will vote today for mayor and three city council seats. 3,500 registered voters, 2,000 eligible but not registered. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Results likely by early evening. Babysitting provided by Cadette Girl Scout Troop 122. Runoff possible June 3 if no candidate tops 50 percent. Precinct inspector William Webster. Mayoral candidates Elbert R. Davis and Maurice McLaughlin. incumbent H. French Brown Jr. not seeking reelection. Group 1 council candidates Harry G. Harris and George Palmer. Group 2 Joe Guidry challenged by Ray Jones and Jack King. Group 3 Bill Rogers contests C. H. Rigdon Jr.
