Boathouse Row Sparks Valparaiso Permit Dispute

Valparaiso trustees weighed jurisdiction over a boathouse with living quarters extending into Tom's Bayou. Amos Fowler, the contractor, lives in the structure while awaiting Corps of Engineers permit. City Attorney Estergren said the panel must decide if it is an accessory building and whether it violates building codes. Fowler’s attorney urged inspection and a June vote after reporting findings.

North Viet Namese Down C130 Amid Heavy Losses At Kham Duc

North Vietnamese forces overran a Special Forces camp near Da Nang killing or wounding many. A C130 carrying about 150 aboard was shot down, possibly the worst air disaster in history, with no confirmed survivors. U.S. and Vietnamese units fought back as mortars and machine guns pounded the camp.

HUD Recertifies Fort Walton Beach Housing Program

The Fort Walton Beach City Council announced HUD recertification of the citys Workable Program for a second year. City Manager Winston Walker said FHA funds will focus on rehab of existing housing with 150 low rent units pursued. The Civic League is slated as sponsor for this housing type. prior program expired May 1.

Mayor Spars With Press At Valparaiso Council Meeting

VALPARAISO The mayor John B Arnold refused to allow WFSH news director John Kondrat to tape record part of the city commission meeting. Arnold gave no comment on whether the ban was his decision or the commission’s. He has accused the press of misquoting him and of inattentiveness at meetings. The agenda included a note on licensing newspapers.

Okaloosa County Moves On Overpass and Roads Plan

County commissioners approved a public road project three miles east of Crestview to enable federal funds for a I 10 overpass over Okaloosa County access to Highway 90. The contract for I 10 from Choal River to Walton line is set to be let in June with completion by end of 1969.

Okaloosa School Board Moves to End School Choice System

The Okaloosa County School Board voted unanimously to negotiate with HEW for an end to the freedom of choice system and adopt attendance zoning. It also reappointed Bobby Ward on a continuing contract after discussions with Superintendent Max Bruner Jr. and accepted resignations including Fort Walton Elementary principal Paul Howard who backed a rival superintendent candidate.
