The 1968 Miss U S A beauty pageant began at Bayfront Park Miami with 51 contestants including one from Washington DC. The winner receives a year abroad travel, $10,000, furs, wigs and a CBS telecast. A dress rehearsal was set for Wednesday ahead of Saturday's final.
In Paris, Ambassador Harriman and Ho Chi Minh aide Xuan Thuy opened talks with restrained exchanges as each side urged the other to scale down the Vietnam war. Harriman proposed a seven point peace plan, starting with restoring the demilitarized zone as a buffer and reducing tensions to enable broader talks.
The Valparaiso City Commission rescinded a plan requiring city newspaper deliveries to buy an occupational license. Mayor John Arnold noted the Pensacola News-Journal complied, while Playground Daily’s Frank Haugh objected as discriminatory and unconstitutional. The city attorney said the tax would violate freedom of the press and the News Journal will be refunded.
Local utility firms met to study moving all services on Okaloosa Island underground. Entrants may submit up to three original works with entry fees of 2 dollars for the first and 1 dollar for each additional piece. A preview on June 7 precedes public viewing June 8 onward. Awards include 100 dollars for best in show 75 50 and 25 for top places.

A 34 year old Hurlburt Staff Sergeant, Marion A. Hicks, was killed crossing Highway 98 east of Navarre. He was struck by a car driven by Leda Young Sackett age 21 and then hit by an unidentified vehicle. State Trooper Bevis said Hicks was thrown onto the hood, windshield broken, and killed instantly. No charges were filed.
