A CH47 Chinook crash 75 miles north of Saigon killed 34 South Vietnamese soldiers and 2 American crewmen with 35 injured. Mechanical failure cited as cause. The disaster raises U.S. helicopter losses to 2,598 in eight years of war.
A Senate Transportation Committee approved by 7 to 0 a bill allowing examiners to require a road test for renewal applicants deemed unqualified to drive. The measure supplements the current renewal law, which takes effect in January 1971 and already requires eye tests every four years.
Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce named Playground Daily News reporter Emma Goggin Outstanding Journalist for 1968 69 at a Koffee Kitch luncheon. The citation praised her national list recognition and state journalism awards along with objective reporting on government and community activities.
The Billy Bowlegs contest will be at 8 p.m. June 2 in the municipal auditorium. Rules require contestants to be single 16 to 20, wear a white bathing suit and white shoes, with optional pre landing show May 31 in pirate costume, 45 minutes prior check in, a 1 p.m. June 1 practice, and a tea with Queen Mrs Edward Lee Gill after. Air show at Postal Point on May 17 features a dogfight between Red Baron pilot Roy Whiddon and Snoopy piloted by Daniel Faust. Whiddon, of the 4533 TAC, performs U Control aerobatics and has a long model flying history since Crestview days.
Sen. George Holahan urged Florida legislators to retain the Cabinet system and back a 129 page omnibus Senate government reorganization bill. He argued the system works and should be modernized with streamlined departments while noting House and Senate staff differences.
A beagle that bit Laurie Bennett last Thursday was located Tuesday in the possession of Don Hilton a state driving examiner. The dog showed no rabies symptoms though shots status is unknown. Hilton said he took the dog home to protect the child from vaccination. The rescue ends a week long search prompted by the girl’s case and public concern.
Secretary of the Navy John Chafee overrode Navy brass and blocked reprimands for two senior officers in the Pueblo incident while stopping short of absolving Cmdr. Lloyd M. Bucher. The court-martial recommended admonitions for Lt. Edward Murphy Jr. and discussed dereliction by Lt. Stephen Harris.
The Florida Legislature memorialized PFC Paul Edwin Strouse of Crestview who died in Vietnam on March 6 and aquanaut Barry L. Cannon, UF engineering graduate, who died in sea lab tests off California. The joint resolutions honor both men for their service and contributions.
Rep. Robert L. Sikes of Florida First District denounces the Florida Legislature for boosting Governor Claude Kirk by raising their own pay from 1200 to 12000 and overrode Kirk's veto. He says the move backfired and earned Kirk a temporary boost.
Mrs. Charles Wilson funded and organized aid after the Rudolph A. Hawthorn family lost their Crestview house. The six children and parents moved into a new home at 448 N Hataway St with donated furniture and no rent for a month. Fire investigators suspect a deep freeze may have caused the blaze. Donations can be left at the North Hataway house or Daily News offices.
Rep. Doug McKay introduces a bill to limit the governor's power to appoint members to boards funded by county commissions. The act lets county boards appoint all members of boards and authorities under county oversight, and bars elected county officials from appointment except ex officio county commissioners.
