The Florida Senate voted 35 to 4 to make first time possession of marijuana under five grams a misdemeanor instead of a felony. The measure would apply to small possession while stiffening penalties for pushers and wholesalers.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad presented to Secretary Rogers a two stage Middle East peace timetable. The plan calls for an initial Israeli withdrawal about two thirds across the Sinai from El Avish to Ras Mohammed.
South Vietnam charged North Vietnamese forces have shifted tactics to shell civilian centers, aiming to avoid casualties near defended military sites. A Foreign Ministry note counted 151 shelling attacks last week, killing 20 and wounding 75, as B52 raids continued in the northeast and Laos.
The Florida State Cabinet approved construction of a 400 000 pier on Okaloosa Island replacing a wooden structure torn down by the state. The project includes restau rant facilities and will extend into the Gulf of Mexico. No objections were filed by May 3 deadline. Doris Jordan and Jerry Melvin led replacement efforts.

U S Steel Corp raises prices on large volume steel sheet and strip by 8.50 to 13 dollars a ton, effective shipments June 16 and July 1. The hike averages 61 percent, affecting auto and appliance sectors as steel boosts prices after the 12 month price freeze. A Washington adviser notes the move is not surprising and calls it the industry's annual increase.
