A Florida Senate committee swiftly approved a bill to authorize a $5,000 reward from the Division of Corrections for information leading to recapture of escaped murderess Marie Dean Arrington. Arrington, who escaped Lowell prison on March 1, was sentenced to death and deemed dangerous by state officials.
Israel's Prime Minister Golda Meir told the Knesset that Arabs are not prepared for a total war while noting Israel's forces are ready for any eventuality. She warned against pipe dreams and stressed vigilance as fighting along the Suez Canal and Jordan River lines could escalate.
United States Senate Republicans criticized Justice Abe Fortas over a reported $20,000 fee from Louis Wolfson's family and an 11 month delay before returning it. Senators urged investigations and even resignation, linking the case to past Fortas and Douglas payments, while Kennedy urged Judiciary Committee review.
A group of militant Southern University students seized an administration building on the New Orleans campus Monday, withdrew after the Louisiana National Guard was alerted, and classes were suspended. Gov. McKeithen kept the guard in place as the probe continued, with authorities saying they would not back down.
Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club backed a 1969 legislative measure to create the Doolittle Memorial and Ordnance Museum Commission for the Twin Cities. The group seeks authority to contract with governments, firms or individuals, and will send copies of the resolution to officials. They also approved hiring Clarence Manion as guest speaker for the fall annual meeting.
The Destin Chamber of Commerce hosts the Fish In Fish Fry on Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m. This event opens Destin's fishing season and adds a Miss Destin beauty contest for local girls aged 16 to 22. Contestants are sponsored by local hostesses, boat captains catch the fish, and residents cook and serve. Adult tickets are $1 and children 50 cents.

A National Airlines Boeing 727 with 75 aboard was hijacked south of Miami and diverted to Havana arriving at 7 18 p m after the hijacker took control 37 minutes after departure as it neared Miami International Airport. The pilot followed instructions then lost radio contact. This year’s wave of hijackings to Cuba has seen 24 successes.
In a West Virginia mining disaster near Richwood, six trapped miners including Eli Walkup were rescued after 10 days in flooded No 8 mine. The incident dubbed a miracle, now fades as survivors cope, attend church, and some return to work while others leave the state.
At the Okaloosa Island Leaseholders monthly meeting a complaint was raised about houses being rented weekly and monthly in violation of island covenants. Art Bogan and Island Authority member Dr A B Galloway urged action possibly requiring commercial licensing through Hotel and Restaurant Association oversight. The discussion also covered a $600 request for a racing boat to represent the area. New officers were announced: George Powell president replacing Don Elwell, Ralph Bryant vice president, John Wilkinson secretary treasurer, with new directors Durell Wilbanks Joseph Gricius and Frank Garner. The Garden Club meets Wednesday at James E. Wenzel’s home.
