In Tallahassee the Senate approved a constitutional amendment allowing a public vote to abolish the lieutenant governor’s office. The 24-16 vote sent the measure to the House, with timing for the election to be decided in a separate bill.
Los Angeles based FBI interview reveals John Ehrlichman did not know what papers or outcomes arose from the Ellsberg burglary probe. Judge Byrne pressed for legal precedents on possible mistrial or dismissal while prosecutors and defense prepare. Haldeman also says he knew nothing of the Ellsberg or Liddy Hunt investigations.
The FBI marked no official commemoration of J. Edgar Hoover's death on the first anniversary. Senator Byrd urged President Nixon to appoint a permanent, nonpartisan FBI director amid morale and leadership concerns following Hoover.
FBI Special Agent in Charge William M. Alexander reported the arrest of Joseph James Walden, an escapee from Eglin AFB Federal Prison Camp. Walden, 27, fled on April 19 while on work release and was found at his former father in law Henry Brundidge’s residence in Andalusia Alabama.
Washington reports the administration warned Congress of a potential serious gasoline shortage this summer as stocks run 47 million barrels weekly while production sits at 43 million. Deputy Treasury Secretary William E. Simon said the government may need to set fuel allocation priorities but prefers market incentives over controls. He cautioned against broad disruptions to agriculture, industry, and public health while denying imminent price gouging concerns.
President Nixon announced tightened price controls while urging farmers to boost production to ease inflation. He ordered major firms to report price changes and notify the Cost of Living Council 30 days before increases above 1.5 percent, with quarterly filings required for smaller rises.
A federal grand jury indicted Rus sell Means and four AIM affiliates in Phoenix on a conspiracy charge to illegally transport arms to Wounded Knee and to cross state lines with intent to incite a riot. Max penalty five years and $10,000 fine.
In Chico California forty fraternity men were questioned in the death of Patricia Catherine Farish 18 found partially nude in an orchard after an all night beer bust at the Tau Gamma Theta house. Autopsy showed strangulation. The body was found by James Brashner near the fraternity. Farish was a mother of a six month old.
The Justice Department charged the Finance Committee to Re elect the President with failure to file reports and keep records on a $200,000 donation by Robert L. Vesco. The indictment names Maurice H. Stans as chairman and Hugh P. Sloan Jr. as treasurer, citing late reporting and missing donor details.
U S secretary Henry Kissinger said he expects to meet with Hanoi’s Le Duc Tho to shore up the Vietnam cease fire despite North Vietnam raising doubts. He noted an agreement to meet but no fixed date, while North Vietnam denied a scheduled session. Officials say talks could start in mid May after messages exchanged with Washington.
Two ICCS helicopters were fired on from Communist territory in northern South Vietnam. Officials reported no injuries or damage. Canadian ambassador Michel Gauvin called the act deplorable, with sources saying fire came from the Communist side near the Thach Han river. Saigon reported 103 truce violations in 24 hours, bringing total violations to 12,670 since January 28.

Army commander Lanusse ordered an urgent meeting after a retired admiral was shot in Buenos Aires. Martial law covers Buenos Aires and major metropolitan areas.
President Nixon named former Georgia candidate Howard Callaway to be secretary of the Army, succeeding Robert Froehlke who resigned after two years in the post. Callaway, 45, a West Point graduate, would take over as Froehlke returns to private business.
