Florida High Court upholds manslaughter ruling in Wadsworth case

The Florida Supreme Court affirmed a manslaughter conviction for Edward Wadsworth despite a district court reversal. The court ruled the testimony by liquor store clerk Louis Laken about prior vodka purchases was admissible as corroborating evidence of intoxication at the time of the crash that killed Helen Ryan in January 1765.

Vietnam War Front Sees Heavier Allied Losses Near Hue

On a third day of heavy fighting in South Vietnam, allied forces said 327 more North Vietnamese troops were killed with 79 Americans and 370 South Vietnamese casualties. The 8th battalion of the 90th North Vietnamese regiment faced the Black Panther company of the 1st Infantry Division and U S 101st Airborne Division near Hue as Vietcong and regional forces suffered further losses.

Ike's Condition Seen As Very Encouraging

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower remained at March Air Force Base Hospital after a heart attack. Physicians reported his condition is less severe than his two prior heart events and that the critical period has passed with no complications. Mrs. Eisenhower stays in a private room and has had no visitors.

Centennial Day Marked by Beard Contest and Parade

Fort Walton Beach observes Centennial Day with John Brooks’s landing at 2 pm on June 13 followed by a bust unveiling at 4 pm. A 7 pm parade along Main Street to Fort Walton Square precedes an 8:30 pm street dance with square dancing and beard and costume contests.

Niceville Couple Sentenced for Negligent Child Care

Mr and Mrs Vance White of Niceville were found guilty of two counts of negligent treatment of their four year old daughter Helen Crickett White. They received six months in jail and a 150 dollar fine each, suspended on good behavior and no future charges. The verdict came after a jury deliberation of nearly two hours. An appeal is planned by attorney James E Moore.

Legal Fight Over Niceville Sewer Plan Draws City Action

Niceville City Attorney Brooks Taylor pledged immediate court steps to prevent a legal fight over the sewer improvement and extension program. He cited a letter from former City Attorney James Moore alleging a $7300 cost increase and threatening a court injunction if work began. Moore faces his own $40000 injunction case for legal services on a street paving bond. The project remains slated, with Polyengineering confirming continuation, while a two car crash on 1st Street and Eglin Parkway caused $650 damage and yielded a failure to yield charge for Regina Totten.

Washington March on Washington Begins With Memphis Caravan

The March on Washington opens with a Memphis bus caravan to Marks Mississippi. Mrs Martin Luther King Jr and Rev Ralph Abernathy address a rally at the Lorraine Motel. Bevel expects 500 to 1,000 Memphians to form the City of Hope shantytown for the marchers.
