FBI preliminary stats cited by Attorney General Kleindienst indicate overall crime known to police dropped 3 percent in 1972, the first decline in 17 years, while violent crime rose modestly due to rapes and assaults. UPI reports Sen. Howard Baker said James W. McCord Jr. testified in closed Senate sessions that he named additional individuals connected to the espionage and sabotage campaign against the Democratic party last year. Baker described McCord as having named names during questioning by the Senate panel.
UPI reports amid Laos releases that about 300 Americans remain missing in action. An American officer in Hanoi doubts the nine released and questions their capture by Pathet Lao. A retired general claims more hostages may exist as U.S. forces withdraw.
Farmers and housewives clash in a nationwide meat price protest as the National Farmers Organization hints at counteraction. Affected markets show price dips while vendors consider withholding sales from April 1 15 and calls for broader boycotts surge across states including Virginia and Alabama.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates the U S effort in Vietnam costs exceed 108 billion dollars in military aid and expenditures. It compares Soviet and Chinese aid totaling 1.66 billion and 670 million respectively and notes an American shift away from global policing toward mere superpower status. It highlights the strategic arms agreement as the era’s key development.
A Senate hearing explored a proposed consumer protection agency and whether it should defend marijuana users’ rights.
