Senate Approves Florida Congressional Redistricting Plan

The Florida Senate approved a redistricting plan increasing the U S House delegation from 12 to 15, with a 25 18 vote. The Meyers proposal aimed at near equal population across districts and preserved Polk County support for Rep James Staley while affecting Rep William Chappell by realigning Volusia Pasco and upper Pinellas counties.

Florida lawmakers revive suit over state amendment ratification

Two legislators Rep Ed Tombetta and Sen Gerald Lewis move to challenge a state constitution provision barring the legislature from ratifying federal amendments until lawmakers face re election. Pettigrew says the state constitution cannot limit federal amendment procedures and vows action on the ERA amendment. The suit previously stalled after the 18 year old voting age change, now revived as the ERA gains Senate adoption.

House Committee Advances Abortion Bill to Floor Vote

In Tallahassee a House Health and Rehabilitative Services Committee approved a liberalized abortion bill 12 to 7. Sponsor Dr Eugene Tubbs amended the Senate therapeutic bill to allow abortion for any reason in the first 12 weeks, with a 12 week Florida residency requirement. Rep Dan Hazelton warned opponents will push to harden the measure on the floor. Tubbs argued for women's rights within medical safety.

British Kill Youth Throwing Gas Bombs in Belfast

In Belfast a 13 year old boy was killed by British troops during clashes with three youths throwing gasoline bombs. A car bomb in a coastal resort wounded dozens and four policemen. It is the fourth Northern Ireland blast in five days as London prepares direct rule talks.

Peace Talks Accessed By Allied Delegations

Paris reported that the United States and South Vietnam cancelled all regular meetings of the Vietnam peace conference and said talks would resume only if the Communists show readiness for meaningful discussion. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong called the move an unacceptable ultimatum, suspending the conference for 24 hours before the Viet Cong envoy's return to Paris.
