H Talmadge Smith Jr. 13, son of Rev H Tal madge Smith, remained in poor to critical condition at Pensacola Baptist Hospital. He collapsed Friday during routine football drills after dizziness. An operation removed a blood clot at the base of his brain. authorities note no blow outside normal drills.
Belfast reports a large explosion wrecking a hairdresser and a nearby bottling plant as security forces seal the area. Britain warns militants that Catholic minority civil rights reforms must continue while Ulster Unionists move to choose a new leader and prime minister after James Chichester Clark's resignation.
Joe Ann Jones, 24, of 85 Germany Drive, Fort Walton Beach, was struck by a car on Beal Parkway and admitted to Fort Walton Beach Hospital with a satisfactory condition. The driver was Wayne C. McNeil, 24, also of Fort Walton Beach. Police arrested two others, Richard E. Peerson, 19, and Jean Anne Troxell, 17, for marijuana offenses, and Ballard E. Daniels, not clear, for marijuana possession, following an intensive city police investigation.
Avalanches roared through the Alps over the weekend killing at least four people and blocking highways from the Italian Riviera to the north. In Susa near the border nine workers were trapped and six freed as containment continued. A hotel wing collapsed at Pescegallo killing two and wounding three while four cars were sent into a ravine near Imperia. Roads including the Riviera highway and routes north of Milan and Turin were buried, and a 600 foot landslide halted traffic at the St Bernard tunnel connecting Italy and Switzerland.
London AP reports richard meade, 31, Olympic gold medalist, says romance with Princess Anne is exaggerated. Buckingham Palace denies romance claims and notes no world tour plans. Anne will travel to Canada in May with her parents. they have ridden together and met at parties.
An avalanche at the Chungar Mining Camp in the Andes left an estimated 256 people dead or missing, with about 400 residents reported as survivors. Government and company officials described a wall of lake water 30 to 60 feet high that swept the camp on Thursday. Interior Minister Armando Artola noted the death toll was not as high as earlier feared.
United Nations Secretary General U Thant hailed Earth Day as a new chapter in world history during spring celebrations. In New York about 3,000 participants joined People for Earth Day events in Central Park while some protestors clashed with police and others planted seeds and held the Earth Day Marathon.
Thirty seven lawmakers urge President Nixon to release 56 million in rural water and sewer grants for fiscal 1971. The group argues 34 000 towns need better water and 44 000 need sewer improvements and 7300 FHA applications were rejected last three years. They urge funding FHA at 100 million or more for fiscal 1972.
In Tallahassee a coalition backed by Ford GM and Chrysler pushes Florida to roll back bumper rules on new cars. The plan would keep 5 mph front bumpers, drop rear and abolish the 10 mph standard set for 1975 while arguing stronger bumpers raise safety costs. Industry and lawmakers clash over insurance savings and consumer costs.
