Dr William Taft associate dean of academic affairs opposes restrictions arguing faculty rights must not be curtailed. Taft on leave attending a Columbia University seminar in New York and not back on campus until Monday. Ferguson questions whether professors are performing their duties and says teaching or researching should not be overshadowed by outside civic involvement.
Indira Gandhi’s Congress secures a decisive two thirds majority in Parliament with 250 seats announced and 6 more from presidential nominees and postponed contests. She denounces opposition claims of dictatorship and vows socialism to bridge economic disparities.
In Ankara President Sunay met with political leaders to form a stable government after the military ousted Demirel. Bombings targeted the U S Consulate and a right wing paper as leaders urge an independent, nonpartisan administration within a year.
Fort Benning Ga AP Lt William Calley Jr faces possible verdicts from voluntary manslaughter to first degree murder if any Vietnam civilian victims are found. Maximums include death for first degree murder and life for second degree. voluntary manslaughter carries up to ten years. The case covers killings at My Lai on March 16 1968 and related charges as specified in the indictment. Kennedy meets with lawyers to set charge for panel and then Calley case moves to six officers for verdict.
Six hundred British troops with helicopters carried out a large security operation in Northern Ireland, stopping about 2000 vehicles near Belfast and inspecting drivers after two soldiers were shot nearby. Police hunt targets IRA members, while right wing Protestants push for internment under Prime Minister Chichester-Clark.
Jane Fonda and fellow entertainers performed an antiwar sketch show in Fayetteville near Fort Bragg to a jammed coffeehouse crowd of soldiers and civilians. The four 30 minute acts spoofed Vietnam war programs and President Nixon, ending with a Star Spangled Banner rendition by Fonda and others. The Army barred access to Fort Bragg, which houses 36 000 personnel, as the tour planned a 20 city run.

A house on Fulmar Circle suffered about $5000 damage after a heater flame ignited fumes. alarms at Colonial Moving and Storage triggered false calls. a downed telephone pole on Eliot's Point Road, a washing machine short at 116 Shell, and electrical trouble at 19 Hyland Street followed. Rescue units also transported three injured from an accident in Destin to local hospitals.
Valparaiso reports the Okaloosa Historical Commission is terminated and a new ten member panel formed from the Historical Society of Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Fort Walton Beach residents Mrs James LaRoche Mrs Lowell Longaker Henry Dobson John Landis join with County officials and others from Baker Milligan Niceville Destin to chair the commission.
Rep Paul Findley asks President Nixon to adopt a seven step plan to foster closer ties with mainland China. He warns America must not ignore Chinese threats regarding Indochina and opposes policy being driven by protests or threats. Findley, on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, had long pushed for broadened contacts with China.
French voters backed the government majority in nationwide municipal elections while turnout lagged due to weather and apathy. Communists and Socialists held their ground as government parties gained 10 to 20 percent over 1965 results amid the shadow of De Gaulle’s resignation and Pompidou's rise. About 500000 councilors in 38000 towns were chosen, with runoffs scheduled where no candidate won a majority.
Florida Department of Transportation reports eight road and bridge projects in Okaloosa County with a total cost of 4.92 million dollars. The Destin US 98 East Pass bridge and approaches, built by L A Contracting, is the largest at 1.63 million and aimed for completion this month.
