A lightning bolt at 8:30 a.m. struck a pole and later hit Hugh O Cahalan’s home at 124 3rd Ave, damaging electrical appliances but not starting a fire. The station’s radio and possibly air conditioning were affected, and a pumper assisted with water at the Fort Walton Beach Motel. The Fort Walton Beach Humane Society reported no adoptions due to rain. Forecasters attributed the weather to squall lines along a cold front, with thunderstorms ending by 3 p.m.
Dorothy H Elmore of 1278 N Main St Crestview was hospitalized in fair condition after a kitchen grease fire Saturday afternoon. Fire Chief Amon Adams stated neighbors reported smoke from the home and rescue teams found her on a living room couch in severe pain.

Canadian court sentences Paul Rose 27 to life imprisonment for the strangling of Quebec Labor Minister Pierre Laporte after a kidnapping. Four FLQ members linked to the case face murder charges. Rose also fined one month for contempt of court.
Jack Harold Adams, 25, of De Funiak Springs, was killed when his car left U S 90 east of Crestview and struck a tree. Trooper W E Glass said the vehicle left the highway traveling west, continued 56 feet after impact, and Adams was apparently thrown from the car.
Congressman Bob Sikes announced that the Secretary of Agriculture approved an extension for emergency conservation in Escambia Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties. The counties, designated disaster area since July 10 1970 due to heavy rains and flooding, can continue needed practices through December 31 1970 with a 1971 program allocation of 90000 dollars. Funds will be distributed based on county committee requests.
Crestview Florida bids opened for the first phase of a new city government complex on Woodruff Avenue and Wilson Street. Low bid of 148 880 from King and Lefner Fort Walton Beach contractors exceeds the 136 000 city budget, with options to alter specs or seek more funds. The phase will house fire and police units. a future city hall will follow. Five firms submitted bids for the fire and police stations. Top bid 186 000 from Ralph Green Construction Co Pensacola, others included F E Booker and Chavis Construction Co Pensacola and A Plus Construction Co Fort Walton Beach.
