Golf Course Decision Shapes Fire Station Site Talks

The Fort Walton Beach city council formed a site committee for a new fire station with Hardis Brock as chairman and discussed locations near the Golf Course, Potter Club, and Industrial Park. Sikes warned the property may revert to the U S if used for something other than a municipal golf course. The council also approved a $2000 Chamber of Commerce welcome fund, set stadium use terms for local high schools, granted concessions for a new softball field, and considered false arrest insurance and Blue Blazers gear for police. Valparaiso to host new museum site for Okaloosa Walton group

Valparaiso city commissioners agreed to provide a site near the B 25 Doolittle Monument on John C Sims Parkway for the Historical Society of Okaloosa and Walton County Inc. The old Liberal Arts Building, leased to the society, will be put up for sale while the museum remains there until November. The new museum will be funded by donations.

Mushroom Recall Massive Request

The FDA has issued a nationwide mushroom recall from South Lebanon Ohio after a large number of mushrooms were found unsafe for consumption. No injuries are reported and the agency is investigating the source of contamination.

Navarre Chamber votes against oil drilling in East Bay

Navarre Holley Chamber of Commerce members voted 71 to 6 against Getty Oil's East Bay exploration plan after remarks by Fort Walton Beach and University of West Florida officials. The opposition cited potential harm to sport fishing, parks, and coastal tourism, warning rigs could threaten the Air Force Master Test Range and coastal ecology.

Hanoi Lists Last Four Okaloosans

The Fort Walton Beach area learns four locally held POWs are among Hanoi’s latest release list. Capt. Jeffrey T. Ellis Col. John P. Flynn Maj. Keith N. Hall and Capt. Robert B. Hinckley from Fort Walton Beach plus Capt. Howard J. Hill of Alexandria, Virginia are among 108 returnees. Flynn will reunite with four grandchildren he has not met.

Federal forces seal Wounded Knee with new roadblocks

Federal marshals and agents tightened a cordon around Wounded Knee with six armored personnel carriers. The siege followed a grand jury hearing in Sioux Falls into the town seizure. Ralph Erickson said the move aimed to prevent entry as AIM leader Dennis Banks claimed authorities were starving the area.
