Florida leaders to air busing amendment debate on TV

Seaplane Hijacked To Cuba

Two armed men hijacked a Chalks Flying Service seaplane in Miami, wounded the pilot James Cothron and a mechanic Douglass Mackenzie, forced the co pilot to fly to Cuba with five passengers, and fled to Havana as police and Coast Guard jets pursued.

Bomb found on TWA jetliner in New York

A live bomb was detected in the cockpit of TWA Flight 7 shortly before its scheduled explosion time at JFK Airport. A German shepherd bomb dog alerted authorities to the device as extortionists demanded a $2 million ransom.

Former Kentucky Governor Louie B. Nunn testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about a confrontation at the Governor's Mansion after the Kentucky Derby. Women Voters Hear Judicial Reform Talk at Fort Walton

The League of Women Voters hosts a 9:30 a.m. meeting at the Fort Walton Yacht Club with Circuit Judge Gillis Powell speaking on consolidation and uniformity in local justice and the abolition of municipal courts. County Judge John W. Bowen will discuss judge qualification and selection, and Walter C. Anderson will cover the financial benefits of state funding. The public may attend and ask questions.

Rogers Warns Reds of Foreign Exploits

Hospital Expenses Trend Downward

County Commissioners acting as the Hospital Board received a four month financial report for the period ending Jan 31 with manager Dee Parkton noting a downward trend in operating expenses. Seaforth Enterprises won a contract to maintain fire extinguisher equipment across the three hospitals and the board approved adopting a fire marshal report for changes and improvements. Negotiations with Eglin AFB surgeons at 18 dollars per hour and 90 percent of patient bills were tabled while Navy physicians offering lower base pay of 15 dollars per hour were to be pursued.

Third Hearing On Highway 98 Loudly Opposed

About 200 citizens packed the city auditorium for the third of four hearings on moving Highway 98 inland. County Commissioner chairman Dee Parkton kept order as Roger Clary of the Chamber of Commerce argued for the route change citing $1.5 million in potential tax revenue. A dissenter was applauded for offering to pay their share to keep the land as is. The final hearing is set for Thursday at 7 pm in Crestview Courthouse.

Gulf Islands National Seashore Park Seen as Regional Economic Boost

Niceville based DP Dee Parkton told the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber that the Gulf Islands National Seashore Park will generate about 13 million annual visitors and spur land acquisition and hiring this year. The plan covers roughly 125000 acres including Ship Island Santa Rosa Island Fort Pickens and Pensacola area lands, with a focus on conservation and recreation.
