U S challenges Florida claim to offshore lands dispute grows

The U S government and Florida spar over about 950000 acres of submerged offshore lands mainly in Florida Bay north of the Keys. Federal witnesses challenge the bay’s status while Florida asserts a longer boundary to caprock lines from Cape Romano to Dry Tortugas.

Inflation Credit Code Passes Senate Panel in Florida

The Senate Commerce Committee approved a new omniform commercial credit code raising credit card interest ceilings from 1.4 percent monthly to 2 percent. The 191 page bill heads to the Judiciary Civilia committee for study before Senate floor action. The plan would lift small loan caps to permit loans up to 25,000 with stepped rates and a sample loan of 1,300 carrying about 288 in base interest plus additional charges.

Accident Prevention Film Scheduled for City Heads

City supervisors of Fort Walton Beach are ordered to attend an accident control conference on Friday March 1 led by Public Works Director Howard Hobbes. The session includes movies lecture and a question period at the Public Safety Building. City Manager Winston Walker warned Hartford Insurance may close operations briefly to allow all 26 employees to attend.

ITT Lobbyist Denies Donation Linked to Suit

A heart specialist testified that lobbyist Dita Beard denied any connection between ITT settlement and the Clintons’ contribution offer to back the Republican convention. Dr. Liszka described Beard’s four year history of irrational behavior from a brain-affected heart condition and noted she drank to calm nerves, not an alcoholic. He said Beard had permission to discuss her case despite concerns of privileged communications.

15 000 Draft Call Announced

Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird announced a three month draft pause and a 15 000 man call for April June. He forecast about 5400 per month and said total 1972 may stay at 30 000 or less to reach historic lows. He cited Vietnam withdrawal as the reason and noted Soviet missile deployment risks.

Penn VFW seeks aid for Calley pardon petition

Pennsylvania VFW members declare Lt William Calley a member in distress and urge President Nixon to pardon him. Tom Crompton of the Gen Douglas MacArthur VEW Post says the petition originated at Broomall and was approved at the VFW midwinter conference. Calley, convicted by a military court martial for killings in Vietnam, has appealed and is confined at Fort Benning Georgia.
