Washington AP A last minute move by Sen Allen Ellender stopped an amendment that would cut off funds for the Cuban freedom flights ending a threat to halt the airlift. Cuban refugees and leaders praised the decision though they called it a victory by default while protests and lobbying continued in Washington. The airlift has brought about 240000 exiles from Fidel Castro's Cuba to the United States.
