Ray Takes Stand in London Denies Killing King

James Earl Ray testified in Bow Street Magistrates Court denying he killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as U S authorities presented a detailed case casting him as the sole actor in the April 4 Memphis assassination. The fugitive described extradition proceedings while a police expert noted procedures in the informal court setting. In Birmingham and Memphis, Ray allegedly bought a rifle and binoculars prior to the crime and checked into a Memphis hotel on April 3 before the alleged actions.

Florida House Speaker Defends Authority in Kirk Materials Probe

In Tallahassee the Florida House Speaker Ralph Turlington told a special committee it has full authority to probe reports that the Florida Industrial Commission mailed Governor Claude Kirk promotional material. Rep. Gerald Lewis said copies and boxes of related items were stacked in the commission room and that material was moved by chairman Gallen without authority. The governor’s task force materials were said to be for job opportunities.

Allied Forces Kull 153 Viet Troops

SAIGON AP reports Allied forces killed 153 North Vietnamese troops in two clashes near the DMZ and east of Quantico City. Ground fighting intensified as U S First Airmobile Cavalry clashed with an estimated 200 NVA near Dong Ha. B52s bombed targets near Saigon and in Tay Ninh and Kontum regions.

Fort Walton Beach taxpayers may appeal assessor estimates

Fort Walton Beach residents who believe their property has been unfairly assessed can appeal before the City Board of Equalization. The board, with members George Alford James Miller Brentwood Bryan and Bill Harbeson, meets for about a week starting July 8 to review complaints, inspect properties if needed, and may propose lower assessments to the tax collector. The city will adopt county taxation rolls and assess at full value as required. See TAXPAYERS, Page 2.

Valparaiso Bank Renames to Valparaiso Bank and Trust

Valparaiso State Bank will become Valparaiso Bank and Trust Company on July 1 after stockholders voted to adopt the new name. The change follows the approval of a Trust Department last December by the State Comptroller and reflects expanded services led by Chairman C Walter Ruckel who touted the move as a giant step forward for banking.

Niceville Sells Water Sewer Revenue Certificates

Niceville City Council will meet in special session at 2 p m today at city hall to accept bids for 3 1000 000 in water and sewer revenue certificates financing extensions to Edgewater Village Rocky Bayou new Okaloosa Walton Junior College campus and James E Plew Elementary School. The project aims to upgrade the city sewer system with a new lift station in Okaloosa County and serve the local civilian and military community through Trust Department services led by Col Warren W Connor.

Hong Kong AP reports a Hanoi broadcast hinting North Vietnamese regular troops fight in South Vietnam alongside the Viet Cong. The 1600 word statement from the People’s Army staff mentions fighting shoulder to shoulder with the South to defeat the U S aggressors, signaling a shift toward acknowledging regulars in the South amid Paris talks and Giap’s prior remarks.

AF Wins Control Of Marine Planes

The Air Force has won, at least temporarily, a dispute over control of Marine tactical air operations in South Vietnam. Marines warn the decision threatens the Marine Corps, while Air Force officials say the move improves air support for ground troops as Army forces also fight in northern provinces once called Marine Land. The issue split the Joint Chiefs of Staff and could shift with ongoing command changes.

Two Local Firms Win Contracts For Over One Million

Congressman Bob Sikes announced two local firms winning contracts exceeding one million dollars each. Vitro Services received a 31.2 million contract from the Dueway Proving Ground Command for a vehicle acquisition and tracking system. Metro Systems Corporation of Fort Walton Beach earned a 91.11.0.30 contract for 370 trestle assemblies and 60 ton universal transoms to support floating and fixed bridges, all work to be done in Fort Walton Beach.

Woman Sparks Trash Fire Over Missed Pickup

A resident frustrated by a missed trash pickup on Thursday ignited her garbage. The blaze spread to nearby grass and trees before firefighters arrived. Officials said it would have been cheaper for the city to collect the trash than to fight the fire.
