A disgruntled Chilean official hijacked a Chilean airline to Argentina and surrendered after threats to blow up the plane. The 78 people aboard were seen leaving the aircraft as Argentine police and troops surrounded the aircraft near an air base.
The House voted to prohibit the FDA from banning saccharin or enforcing the ban with federal funds through Sept 30 as part of a larger $20.7 billion bill for Agriculture and related agencies. The bill passed 380 to 45 and moves to the Senate.
U S and British negotiators almost reached a deal to avert an unprecedented suspension of scheduled flights linking the United States with London and Hong Kong. Officials cautioned the remaining issues were complex and a last minute agreement was hoped for before the deadline.
Brezhnev warned that Carter era human rights advocacy may renew the cold war as he spoke at a state dinner in Paris. He stressed stopping the arms race as the top problem while Giscard urged detente despite differences. Police dispersed Jewish demonstrators and right wing groups with no injuries reported.
Springfield lawmakers advanced an amendment placing the Illinois prosecutor's Advisory Council on Angelo Towhead a small Mississippi River island south of Cairo. Rep Ronald Stearney said the move drowns the bureaucracy, arguing the council is a taxpayer ripoff while others sought clarity on the island's nature. The measure, after a 54 52 vote, progresses toward final passage.
A Fort Lauderdale laundry, The Helpy-Selfy, now offers beer and wine with a topless go go show. Owner Jim Fuller says the lounge is intended to offset operating costs, following city commission approval. The venue advertises suds and suds while you wash, with draft beer rising to 75 cents during shows.
