Ragged and hungry prisoners, about 150 North Vietnamese troops, surrendered to South Vietnamese forces on Saigon’s northern fringe. Officials called it the war’s largest mass surrender to date.
Tens of thousands converge on Washington for a Poor People's Campaign march to demand an end to poverty and violence. A White House clash between marchers and police marred the eve of the event while protests targeted Rep. Wilbur Mills over welfare policy.
London a court heard James Earl Ray challenge extradition to the United States on charges connected to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ray, in custody, received limited time to prepare as U.S. lawyers laid out the request. The hearing was set for June 27 in Bow Street Court with an American attorney arriving to aid defense planning.
County offices in the Okaloosa Courthouse and the Okaloosa Island Authority will operate 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday starting July 1, with Saturday closures. The sheriff’s office remains open Saturdays. Officials say the change improves service and efficiency for residents and county employees.

Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners relieves Sen William Dean Barrow of his county attorney contract effective immediately at a special budget meeting. Chairman Olen Williams cites Barrows duties as state senator and frequent absences as hindering county business. The 12 year term ends with his removal and a replacement will be chosen next Tuesday with no financial settlement decided yet.
A new pilot at Eglin Air Force Base touched down, bounced twice, then a third time before finally landing. He taxied to the hanger and asked the control tower for the exact landing time, only to be met with a deadpan question from the controller: Which one.
The Niceville Okaloosa County Joint Planning Commission unanimously recommended to the Okaloosa County Board of Commissioners zoning the White Sands Community R-1A area a single family district with 1200 square foot minimum homes. Residents and White Sands Home Owners Association represented by Valparaiso attorney John Harris attended the meeting with 31 residents.
