Florida campus police chief says six new officers on night walking patrols in female pedestrian areas reduced fondling and other crimes on the University of Florida campus. He plans to recruit nine more as part of a safety push.
An early morning blaze caused about 5000 damage to the Play ground Daily News publisher Frank Haugh's Fort Walton Beach office. Firefighters contained the fire to one room within minutes while investigators pursue a cigarette as a possible cause.

Hanoi radio declares U S pilots captured over North Vietnam will be tried by the Democratic Republic of Vietnam for crimes against humanity. It says they bombed schools pagodas churches hospitals factories markets and homes killing civilians and that pilots are held in POW camps and being treated humanely.
Major banks raised the prime lending rate to 8.14 percent, a new high, signaling higher costs for large corporate borrowing. Some banks promised smaller borrowers would not be affected, while lawmakers urged antitrust action and warned of market disruption.
Rupert Rudy Simpler announced his candidacy for the Group 2 Niceville City Council seat as the term of Charles B. Johnson ends next month. Lonnie C. The Fort Walton Beach City Council sanctioned draft plans for a library expansion without a price tag, aiming to fit the project into this fiscal year.
