May data show unemployment at 6.9 percent, a modest drop from April. Wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent, with farm prices easing and coffee and several commodities falling. Total employment rose to 90.4 million, labor force participation up to 63.2 percent.
The 8,272-ton Canadian National ferry William Carson sank bow first after striking a submerged iceberg six hours from St. John’s to Goose Bay Labrador. All 38 passengers and 90 crew were rescued unharmed. CN spokesman praised calm actions of passengers and crew during the predawn sinking. Violet Snow described being plucked from a lifeboat and fear of the undertow.
DEA recommends a 22 000 gallon septic tank to serve two houses with interim capacity for up to eight homes. Carnathan asked the county to take over operation until Florosa district can run the plant. Lewis objects, seeking move of the facility to protect groundwater and property values. Commissioners approved a delay in county control.
