Senator George McGovern refused to be stampeded by telegrams urging dropping Eagleton as his running mate. He insisted nothing has changed and reaffirmed full support for Eagleton after noting telegrams weighted against him. Aides said campaign fund raisers were unsettled by concerns Eagleton had mental health treatment.
President Nixon ordered staff and spokesmen to refrain from commenting on Senator Eagleton’s past psychiatric treatment. White House press secretary Ziegler said the hands off policy covers all Nixon aides including Vice President Agnew. McGovern allies warned of backlash if Eagleton were opposed, while Eagleton and lawmakers from both parties voiced support.
In Jerusalem Prime Minister Golda Meir directly urged Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to seize the moment after expelling Soviet advisers and hold peace talks. Cairo sources cite US support for Israel as a barrier, while Meir describes the hour as ripe for change and equality in negotiations. The Creek Indian Trading Post at Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon opens Monday July 31. Nineteen Creeks from Oklahoma have moved to Macon to attend the event and observe the inauguration of the post.
Senator William Saxbe blamed White House access for a GOP discipline breakdown that aided end the war amendments. Senate votes cut funds for Indochina, while a stalled $18 billion foreign aid bill faltered. House panel backed pullout with POW release and cease fire conditions as White House aides warned of defeat on the floor.
The Ninth Circuit agreed to hear a defense protest over an alleged legal wiretap of people tied to Daniel Ellsberg and Anthony Russo. Opening statements were postponed as the court reviews Judge Byrne's ruling. Ellsberg and a Rand Corp colleague face charges of theft espionage and conspiracy.
In Gainesville a five year old girl trapped by a Jungle Jim ride lip had her finger severed at the base. About 12 600 miners across northern West Virginia observed a 24hour tribute to nine workers killed in a fire at Consolidation Coal Blacksville No 1 mine. Mines were closed in memory as bodies remained entombed. the memorial may evolve into a strike as the period ends.
At the St Louis convention delegates divided between George McGovern and Benjamin Spock as the People's Party seeks a presidential nominee. Spock is favored to appear on the ballot in 10 states, while a southern faction led by Charles Briody pushes for McGovern, offering a ticket with a stronger platform and risks of double ballot names. The party platform includes tax reform, guaranteed income, and an end to the Vietnam War.
