Chicago report states the state's case against Richard Speck for eight murders is to be presented to a county grand jury. Speck, described as a 2 year old seaman, has been held at a hospital facility after being seized and charged as the alleged killer who attacked sleeping student nurses.
John Bates an 18 year old Whatley Alabama skin diver was struck from beneath by a turquoise green boat near a Destin bridge. The vessel with two men and two women aboard did not stop. Bates was rescued and underwent a two and a half hour operation at Fort Walton Beach Hospital.
Six civil cases set for trial in Circuit Court were listed. Highsmith sued the deceased girl and auto owner over a crash on U S 9 east of Crestview with a prior jury ruling against him claiming Miss Walker drove the vehicle. Joel Boyd Ledion and wife Carol sue Aida Soto Pham for 100 000 over a September 1964 crash on U S 9 west of Crestview. Fort Walton Lumber and Supply Co faces trial over alleged inferior brick in home veneering. Jenee F Payne sues Wayne Willett seeking about 50 000 in sales damages.
At Eglin AFB a retirement ceremony honors Col P La Barbera taught solo by Lt James E Roberts who later became Maj Gen Roberts commander of the Air Proving Ground Center. The event marks Roberts’s final duty as APGC commander before August 1 reassignment to Chanute. La Barbera, from Rome, Italy, served since July 1964 and is married to Ester Alfonso with four daughters Rita Margaret Therese and Mary.
