An Israeli military court sentenced Kozo Okamoto to life in prison for his role in the Lod airport massacre that killed 26 and wounded 79. He received life terms on three charges and 10 years for aiding the PFLP, with the judge noting Israel’s death penalty abolition.
Legislator Lew Earle accuses Gov. Askew of misrepresenting a 1971 tax referendum while the attorney general signals a potential court challenge only in direct cases. PSC approves Gulf Power passing its corporate tax to Consumers. Yarborough notes other firms may follow. Earle foresees a conservative legislative trend after November elections to curb new taxes.

Fitzsimmons cited labor and national interest, noting the board represents almost two million members. The three day meeting continues. In Vicenza police arrested a civilian U S Army employee and his girlfriend on extortion charges involving U S Army officials. In Tulsa Morton R Harrison, key figure in Will Rogers Memorial, dies at 81. Harrison was eighth Cherokee and WWI aide to Roosevelt.
New York. Mayor John V. Lindsay called the assassination of Mafia underboss Thomas Eboli an affront and a disaster for the city. Police questioned known gangland figures including Carlo Gambino as authorities speculated the murder solidified Gambino's crime empire.
Houston space center reports a Soviet and US plan to launch two Soyuz and an Apollo craft in 1975 for a shuttle docking in Earth orbit. One Soyuz will lift from Baikonur, followed by an Apollo launch from Cape Kennedy seven and a half hours later. The two capsules will rendezvous, test docking and rescue capabilities, then remain connected for two days.
Senate GOP Leader Hugh Scott taunts Democrats to pass the Miami Beach platform, recalling Truman’s 1948 push. Mike Mansfield concedes a tough race for McGovern and Mapleton against Nixon’s foreign policy, as debate centers on Vietnam troop withdrawal by Aug. 31. Scott criticizes reforms as underrepresenting Italian American, Lithuanian American, and Slovak American groups.
In Lenadoon Belfast IRA gunmen suspended operations against the British Army after a large Catholic evacuation led by Rev. Jack Fitzsimons. TRA said they called off attacks following government talks in which William Whitelaw offered troop withdrawal if the residents remained.
Washington reports the administration imposed wage and price controls on virtually the entire lumber industry, covering 62 000 wholesale retailers and manufacturers. The move follows intolerable price rises. The Federal Reserve notes industrial output grew 0.8 percent in June, marking the tenth straight rise. Census Bureau shows more than half of U S households earned over 10 000 last year, yet inflation eroded purchasing power.
Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, a Democrat, stated he will back the Democratic ticket at all levels in the November election. He criticized an alternate slate of delegates that bypassed him, but offered cooperation with Alderman William Singer's slate if it aligns with Democrats locally and nationally.
President Nixon instructed Commerce Secretary Peter G. Peterson to push for a comprehensive new trade agreement with the Soviet Union by year’s end. Talks in Moscow aim to settle Lend Lease debt, credit terms, patent laws, most favored nation status, and a maritime accord, with a Washington session to follow. Peterson said some issues may require ongoing negotiations and announcements will follow as deals are reached. Nixon returns to Washington to address inflation-tilted Congress after a Western White House stay.
Tallahassee UPI reports Senate President-designate Mallory Horne will not join the Republican Party or back Nixon. He calls himself aligned with Democrats for McGovern and aims to help moderate Democrats win re elections. The Florida Democratic party warns a new fealty rule could discipline candidates who secretly stump for Republicans. Two Brevard County candidates have resigned from the county executive committee over McGovern support.
In Panama City Sen Dempsey Barron says he will seek the Senate presidency if reelected to the District Three seat. The 16 year veteran would be senior senator and aims for 1975 76. George Hollahan disputes for leadership after Mallory Horne. Pet tigrew challenges Hollahan for his Miami seat. Barron's district covers Bay Washington Holmes Jackson Calhoun Gulf Franklin Liberty Gadsden Leon Wakulla Jefferson Madison and parts of Walton Taylor.
Shalimar resident Miss Aileen Ellis, chief librarian of the Eglin AFB Recreational Library, is named in the 37th edition of Who's Who in America. She has led Fort Walton Beach branch AAUW activities, served as state travel coordinator, and was elected president of the Alabama Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. Ellis, a six year Eglin employee, holds degrees from Milligan College and Peabody College and is secretary of the Florida Library Association's College and Special Libraries Division.
H. French Brown Jr. of the Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce argues the South Okaloosa Courthouse belongs in Fort Walton Beach, citing census data and geography. He says 68 percent of south Okaloosa’s population and 55.5 percent of the county reside there, with Niceville Valparaiso area centered nearby.
