Florida delegates at the Wallace convention grew uneasy after police escorts and a crowded floor. Some warned of heavy losses for Democrats while others urged party unity and debated support for McGovern.
The POW Family Group endorses George McGovern at a Washington press event. Sheila Cronin lauds his early opposition to the Vietnam war and demand for POWs to be freed. McGovern vows withdrawal of U.S. forces if elected but would keep a residual force to secure POW releases and missing in action.
Local resident William Houston Weaver 18 15 Pryor Rd Fort Walton Beach was arrested by Special Operations Officer Grover Ayers Jr and Patrolman Jose Ponce at 6 p.m Sunday for selling marijuana to juveniles. The arrest closed an extended police probe led by Sgt John Fridley Ayers and Ponce into juvenile marijuana possession. Weaver is held at the Fort Walton Beach jail pending arraignment by Judge Howard Gill.
Yarborough seeks re election to the Florida Public Service Commission the state wide contest on the ballot. He has chaired the 3 member panel for the past two years and is a veteran public figure with 26 years in various state and local posts.

Her 1965 vehicle struck by Alexander Nottage 310st FHS Eglin AFB driving a 1964 auto. Nottage passed to left as Pritchett began a left turn. damage estimated at 700 to Pritchett’s car and 300 to Nottage’s. Charges pending. Another collision on Eglin Parkway at 8 05 p m between Terry Baker 19 Rt 4 Box 150 Lot 9 Beal Parkway and James W Groves 27 Quinta Villa Crestview caused 400 and 600 damage respectively. Baker charged with violation of right of way and Groves with DWI and no valid license.
A medium sized brown bear attacked four scouts in tents at Philmont Scout Ranch in Northeastern New Mexico early Sunday. Two scouts were admitted for puncture wounds, while the other two received minor scratches and were released back to their 12 day hiking trek in the Cimarron wilderness.
Three 18-year-olds were arrested on first degree murder charges in the death of Marion Ogden a 15 year old girl from Brooksville Florida. Her body was found in a five foot grave near a road in Holmes County Florida. The suspects are Donny Miles of Slocomb Alabama Tim Lindenschmidt and Joseph Holland from the Tampa area Florida. Ogden had been missing since late June and apparently ran away with her 13 year old sister who is safe. She was killed on the night of July 4 apparently by strangulation and a heavy blow to the head.
Fort Valley State College faculty, 63 signers, call a white plaintiffs suit for more integration a vicious attack on students and college competence. They note compliance with the Civil Rights Act and point to rising white faculty and graduate enrollment while undergraduates show no similar rise.
Government figures from the Public Health Service and National Safety Council indicate Okaloosa County residents experience fewer fatal and non fatal accidents than the national average. The county reports 51 fatal accidents yearly with autos causing 23, and a local fatality rate of 55 per 100 000 people versus 56 nationally.
U S military officers said helicopter crews evacuating wounded near An Loc received three foot electric cattle prods to deter South Vietnamese mobs from boarding or approaching the aircraft. The devices, battery powered, were issued to medics and crewmen about two months ago after incidents in and around the provincial capital 60 miles north of Saigon. Tear gas had been issued to some crewmen in rescues preceding this admission.
Beirut UPI reports Libya appoints Maj Abdel Salam Jalloud as premier while Col Muammar Khadafy retains RCC leadership. A largely civilian cabinet includes 16 civilians and only one other officer, with lingering reports of a coup and Khadafy’s possible removal or resignation blocked by fellow officers.
An 18 year old Fort Walton Beach man, identified as Thomas W Lowe Jr, was arrested Sunday night on auto theft charges. He allegedly stole a 1972 station wagon owned by Harold Crowson of 138 Hurlburt Road Wright. Crowson reported the vehicle missing Friday morning. Lowe was spotted by Deputy George French operating the stolen car in Destin Sunday night.
Thomas Raymond Mantell, 25, of 208 Shell St Fort Walton Beach, arrested Sunday at 2 10 a m for marijuana possession after officers Lt Phil Irish and Patrolman Eugene Rogers intercepted him near Beal and First St A package of marijuana was found in the front seat Mantell to appear at the city courthouse at 9 30 a m Aug 16 after posting a 506 bond Also Sunday four coins including a 1903 5 silver dollar and a 1916 D mercury dime were reported missing from Jimmy J Benaquis at 170 Miracle Strip with theft time between July 11 16 Investigating officer Jim Martens
