The Cost of Living Council says 67 suits were filed in federal district courts nationwide after 20,076 IRS led compliance checks for Phase II price posting rules. Violators face fines up to 2500 dollars.
The West Coast dock strike resumes negotiations next week with most issues settled except a 5.2 million final wage. The 106 day tieup continued as President Nixon pressed Congress to end the strike. Labor Secretary Hodgson criticized Bridges for defiance toward Nixon and Congress.
Coast Guard cutters Stovis and Balsam sailed into Adak harbor towing two Russian trawlers the Lannie and Beloyan after a brief confrontation in the Bering Sea. Skippers were reported detained aboard the Stovis as the seizure followed fishing inside the 12 mile U.S. limit.
British troops fired rubber bullets and baton charged as about 2 000 demonstrators, many IRA suspects, pressed near Magilligan Camp and Armagh city hall. Police and armored cars guarded key sites amid arrests and injuries in the anti-internment protests.
Stanford University fired EH Bruce Franklin the first time in 70 years after a faculty panel and President Richard Lyman recommended dismissal. Trustees voted 20 to 2 to terminate the self described Maoist English professor amid campus protests in drizzling rain.
Air Force Academy in Colorado has concluded an investigation into 39 cadets accused of violating the honor code. Twenty seven cadets were found to lie steal or cheat while twelve were charged with tolerating others. Four cadets were reported smoking marijuana. A new probe into marijuana use at the academy has begun.
In New York author Clifford Irving denies suspicions of being duped by an impersonator of Howard Hughes. Irving's attorney rejects The New York Times report about a forged ring and a forger actor, while a Swiss bank account in the name of H R Hughes is said to be legitimate. A German speaking blonde woman allegedly used a forged passport, and $650,000 in checks from McGraw-Hill were not cashed or deposited.
Valparaiso sees Trarold R. Melding named Postmaster by Carl C. Ulsaker, regional official. The appointment follows a period of acting postmaster duties since July 31 after Mrs Edith Petrey’s retirement after 24 years in the office and civil service at Eglin AFB.
Secretary of Transportation Volpe estimated up to 150 million will be needed to ease Disney World traffic jams that have clogged I 4 west of Orlando after the park opened. He cited scarce hope for a quick fix and noted three million visitors since October. The ECFRPC will receive 116000 for a two phase plan to improve bus service and study a regional multi modal center and 1990 area wide transit and highway needs.
