Florida hears Massachusetts expert on corporate tax burden
Massachusetts official Owen Clarke told Florida lawmakers that if Florida enacts a corporate income tax the federal government would pay half the bill. He explained that consumers pay only a small share through deductions and that corporations deduct the taxes paid to the federal government. Florida now has no corporate tax, only a capital stock levy. Governor Askew plans to push a corporate income tax.

Brother Burned in Rescue Attempt Ends in Tragedy
Willie Campbell 20 Crestview dies in Laurel Hill cabin blaze after brother Ferrin Campbell Jr. 22 is burned in a failed rescue. Fire officials say Willie, a Crestview High star and later at Enterprise Junior College, likely asleep when the fire started around 1 a.m. Ferrin drove to alert neighbors. the frame hunting lodge burned with the structure collapsing. Ferrin survived, treated then released, while investigators probe undetermined cause. Lyndell Davis, Crestview coach, recalls Campbell as a talented guard forward who scored 1734 points in three years and planned to attend Florida State University.

Okaloosa County School Board awarded the Fort Walton Beach junior high project to Fulghum and Hinmen for 1 841 000 dollars. The school will bear the Max Bruner Jr. name and sit in the Victoria Garden area. Sealed bids were opened at a Crestview meeting. Sanders Construction Co. bid 485 853 dollars to renovate Meigs Junior High in Shalmar. The board discussed adding classrooms to Addie R. Lewis Junior High under construction in Valparaiso. The new Lewis building near Eglin AFB will house 850 students. Ruckel Junior High in Niceville now serves Valparaiso students with 1650 enrolled, exceeding its design 1062 capacity.
