The Army unveiled its first major reorganization in years to reduce inefficiency and costs by closing unnecessary headquarters and trimming the chain of command. Army Secretary Robert F. Froehlke announced changes to be implemented by year end 1973.
Washington reports the 3rd Army once led by Patton is being eliminated by Army Chief of Staff Creighton Abrams. The move consolidates commands, saves costs, and relocates personnel while noting no base closures. The reorganization targets a $100 million one-time cost and roughly $190 million annual savings. ROTC programs will shift to TRADOC oversight at four regional centers.
London reports the government will extend the 90 day wage and prices freeze for up to 60 more days after February 27 and likely keep statutory curbs on pay into year end. Industry groups pledge cooperation while labor unions refuse. Beef prices rise with traders accused of profiteering.

A four man all black fact finding team reports that the Economic Opportunity Coordinating Group in Broward County discriminates against whites. They cite headquarters in black neighborhoods, ineffective white beneficiary recruitment, and white skeptics viewing it as a black program. The panel sent its findings to Washington and Broward offices. The program employs 160 staff, about 75 percent black, with a $2 million annual budget.
Former Louisiana Attorney General Jack P. F. Gremillion serves a three year perjury sentence at the Federal Prison Camp, Eglin AFB. He has been there since Jan 5 under a new statute allowing parole after starting the term. He is at a minimum security facility near New Orleans for housing. Inmates perform barracks upkeep and grounds maintenance tasks on base.
U S air forces pounded North and South Vietnam Cambodia and Laos in a two day strike. B52 raids after Thursday hits targeted supply dumps and the Ho Chi Minh Trail area along with Panhandle operations. Casualties included 38 Communist deaths and 9 South Vietnamese wounded or missing.
Reporter William T. Farr, 38, freed by order of Justice Douglas after 46 days in Los Angeles County jail for refusing to reveal sources in a Charles Manson murder trial story. Farr pledged to return to work and remain silent on sources, marking a landmark First and Sixth Amendment case.

Scientists in Birmingham tested feeding beef and dairy cattle with newsprint processed into a nutritious paste using a water soak and fungus. Trials found the paper non toxic and not to affect beef yields or milk production.
