Laird predicts higher withdrawals from Vietnam this year
In Saigon Defense Secretary Melvin Laird said the United States will withdraw additional thousands of GIs in 1970, aiming to beat the 284,000 troop target by May 1 as current strength stands at 332,500. He noted reduced enemy threat in South Vietnam while Laos shows increases and Cambodia remains steady. He linked withdrawals to progress in Paris peace talks and Vietnamization, and reported ongoing U.S. air campaigns in Laos and Cambodia. Meanwhile, four American servicemen died and 11 wounded in four booby trap incidents, with two more killed when a helicopter was shot down in the central highlands. Mary Esther officials have issued an invitation to bid on office furniture for the new city hall under construction. Items include 56 occasional chairs 10 swivel chairs four filing cabinets and one conference desk. The jail equipment will not be installed now. The building covers a council room offices and city jail space though the jail fit out is deferred. Construction was delayed years ago after flooding damaged streets. Architects Nichols and David designed the project.
