County commissioners moved toward county wide zoning and planning with a plan to form a planning commission of 11 members. They discussed financing via water and sewer bonds and tapping fees, and set next Tuesday to outline a budget and offices for the commission.
Oka Joosa County School Board met at Crestview Courthouse and learned that four elementary schools in Mary Esther Ocean City Elliott Point and Shalimar failed SACS accreditation due to excessive class sizes and lack of fully accredited teachers. The letter commended self studies and financial handling but warned improvements needed for reinspection next year.
At a Tuesday Okaloosa County School Board meeting the Okaloosa County Education Association urged inclusion of the minimum salary schedule for next school year. OCEA President Leslie Herrington said the schedule would help retain teachers amid financial uncertainty. Supt. Max Bruner Jr. hoped to maintain or raise pay, noting veto millage could affect salaries. Chairman Jack Foster warned the board risks closure if it cannot compete with Alabama and Georgia on pay.
James Moore announced a long range plan for Juniper Creek Reservoir to provide future water storage, recreation, and industrial facilities. The project, discussed before the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, would span across Juniper Creek north of Niceville, with parts into Valparaiso and the Eglin Reservation, and proceeds without fixed schedules.
South Okaloosans rallied for the Red Cross blood drive, meeting a 160 pint goal and surpassing it with 205 units from 285 volunteers, though 30 were rejected for various reasons. L. C. Powell praised the success and said organizers expect to exceed the south Okaloosa quota again in the April drive.
The First National Bank raises one year certificates of deposits to 5 percent effective today. Bank president Jimmie Tringas cites a jump from 4 percent over the past two years. Directors authorize the rise and affected certificate holders will receive notice by letter from bank official Bob Faircloth.
Circuit Judge Charles Wade expressed surprise at being named a Gulf Federal Savings and Loan director. He learned of the nomination from Tuesday’s Daily News after attending a Joint Civic Club meeting at Eglin Air Force Base. Wade denied intent to run, said no permission was given, and joined 12 others nominated to fill terms of Winston Walker and Howard McGee amid possible board expansion to seven directors. Campbell’s court case against the board is set for Friday as the Gulf Federal proxy battle proceeds toward the January 17 annual meeting at Crestview office.
Major General Andrew J. Kinney told Okaloosa County civic clubs at the Eglin Officers Club Open Mess that Air Proving Ground Command work in Vietnam aims at a form of peace through strong deterrence. He warned against limited wars and urged rapid suppression of aggression, noting the base prepares for a tour by 15 generals to discuss Vietnam war solutions. The gathering drew 300 leaders with Kinney at the head table alongside club presidents and APGC officials.
Two robbery suspects bound over to Circuit Court after being charged with holding up Junior Food Store No 9 on West Highway 98. Leroy Walton 20 and Armstead David Gould 29 identified. arrested at a road block east of Fort Walton Beach. A pistol and cash recovered. Deputies Williams Johnson Hendrix involved.
Okaloosa Walton Junior College launches Modern Mathematics for Parents across five education centers in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Classes run 6 30 to 9 30 p m with sessions at Choctawhatchee and Walton High School centers on Tuesdays Crestview High on Thursdays and Freeport High on Mondays inviting all interested parents to enroll.
Niceville City Manager Clifford Bean and Police Chief Charles F Commander resigned Tuesday amid claims of political pressure and job interference. Commander steps down at 4 pm, Bean immediately. Resignations follow a contentious election under investigation by the Governor's office and a Grand Jury.
Residents of the Pinehurst subdivision won a victory Tuesday night at FAVB City Council as the Municipal Planning Board denied rezoning Pinehurst fronting lots from R-1 to R-2 but recommended commercial zoning for area fronts to Pinehurst Drive. Council also received seven Public Works and eleven Finance Committee recommendations plus planning board notes.
Don BD. Meiklehohn of the state beverage department reports November 1987 cigarette tax receipts totaling 5,096,259. Of this, 1,524,926 goes to the general revenue fund and 3,561,322 is shared with qualified municipalities. Okaloosa County towns receive 17,022 among Cinco Bayou Crestview Fort Walton Beach Laurel Hill Mary Wither Niceville Okaloosa Valparaiso.
Major John C Graver will receive the Air Force Cross today at 4 p m on the Warlburt flightline in front of Base Operations. A reception follows at the Hurlburt Officers Club on Santa Rosa Sound.
David Kinlaw and Rupert M. Miller were elected to the Valparaiso City Commission and Mayor John Bruce Arnold was reelected to a third term as mayor. Kinlaw 234 votes, Miller 245, Arnold 562 from 193 ballots. commissioners Amos Fowler 196, E Fred Johnson 193, Clifford Watchous 56. Swearing in at noon January 16.
