Budget Director George P. Shultz says the Nixon administration will send an expansive budget to Congress for the new fiscal year that could balance if the economy strengthens. He calls the current budget "just barely" in control and notes a potential small deficit under employment-based calculations.

A Peru air force helicopter reached the crash site where a Lima to Pucallpa airliner carrying 92 people went down on Christmas Eve. Only Juliana Koepcke, 17, survived nine days in the Amazon. She suffered a broken collar bone and insect bites, and may be discharged within a week. Her father Hans Koepcke, an ecologist, was the lone visitor.
Ronnie White, 29, of 203 Lakeview Dr., was charged after an alleged robbery at a North Ferdon Boulevard superette where he once worked. He allegedly demanded more money, displayed a possible weapon, and took $114 under threat. White was caught in south Walton County and jailed in Okaloosa County on $5,000 bond.
British troops and gunmen exchanged fire at two border sites between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Two gunmen were hit near Stea County Fermanagh. no casualties reported in the Keady County Armagh incident. A sniper bullet shattered a Land Rover windshield in Belfast while Londonderry gunfire wounded a 14 year old boy entering hospital.
Washington reports that under farm bloc pressure the administration released 109 million dollars in loan funds for rural electric cooperatives. Senator Herman Talmadge and Secretary Earl Butz said the move frees part of a 595 million appropriation to finance equipment and expansion as OMB had also freed 55.5 million in frozen conservation subsidies earlier in the week.
Delta Air Lines reports 19 of an estimated 950 passengers may have been affected by a radioactive material leak from a medical isotopes shipment. Luggage checks in Chicago found four radioactive items, with more reports expected as the search expands.
